On the 24th of February 1813, the USS Hornet engaged the HMS Peacock off the northern coast of South America around the Caroband bank. At 1725, the two ships exchanged broadsides. The Hornet’s greater maneuverability and more accurate guns quickly disabled the Peacock. Within 15 minutes, the British ship lost her captain, William Peake, several crewmembers, and was taking in water. U.S. captain, James Lawrence, accepted the Peacock’s surrender. Both ships anchored and began repairs, but the Peacock’s damage was too extensive and she quickly sank. The Hornet returned to the United States with the Peacock’s survivors, arriving at Martha’s Vineyard on the 19th of March.
