Hi,
Just curious which Rate or class of ships would you most like to play in the forth coming Sails of Glory game?

1: 1st and or 2nd rates (90 + gun ships, 3 deckers)
2: 3rd rates (64 to 80 gun ships, 2 deckers)
3: 4-6th rates (roughly 30 to 60 gun ships, 4th rates were 2 deckers, 5th and 6th rates had 1 deck)
4: 'Unrated' (includes most naval/privateer vessels with <= 24 guns such as Corvettes, Sloops, Brigs, Xebecs, Schooners, etc)

Sorry I don't know how make this an actual 'poll' but if you'd just reply that would be fine with me.

I'm torn... whereas I have a ton of respect for the workhorses of the fleet (3rd Rates, especially British 74's, the heart of the best navy in the world during the time in question), I love the idea of frigate actions (5th & 6th Rates, although the American frigates where so over-gunned as to be almost 4th Rates). Smaller engagement sizes equals (typically) quicker game play and less of an impact on the wallet.

I am growing fonder of smaller engagements, especially those involving frigates. Thirty years ago, it was all ships-of-the-line.

At the bottom of the page when you create a poll, there is a section that asks you how many options you want. Once you fill that section out, the rest will appear. Try editing your post and see if you can add one.

Sorry this is almost the same question as asked in "The ship I want to command" poll by Comte de Brueys.

I added the poll to it for you. Before you submit a thread, there are a bunch of options down below where you enter your text. You will find the Poll stuff there.

Thought I had responded to this - must have been the other one. Unrated for me - ship rigged sloop of war - less constraints of squadron duty, more independant command, and more prizes!

I like the 74's, not as nimble as the frigates, as glamorous as the first rates but they were the work horses of fleet action and could go toe to toe with just about anything. Having multiple gun platforms and a range of ordinance plus the ability to send cutting out parties, the survivability to take a mountain of punishment and the ability to fight in line or alone they represent all that is interesting in the naval period of the time.

Daniel,

I like the 74's too and the fact there were 3 sizes. But in reading William James' Naval History of Great Britain, the lions share of the cutting out expeditions appears to have been performed by the frigate crews.

I voted for 4-6th rates for the reasons stated above. I think SOG will lend itself well to frigate actions. I am also with Vol. as to the unrated ships as my interest is to the War of 1812 at the moment - lake actions and cutting out actions by boats against schnooners and sloops!

I voted for the Third Rate ships as "most interested" because I really AM most interested in a few of them. :-) But from the perspective of what I can see myself collecting the most of and playing more often I'm sure Frigates will dominate my collection. My tendencies in most war games are more to maneuverability vs. overwhelming firepower...as long as the maneuverable combatant has a chance of causing damage of course.

Of course, I'm also pre-ordering HMS Victory. So that goes to show you just how firm I am in my convictions. :salute:

It looks like Frigates have more fun with more maneuverability.
But it would be interesting to have some unmatched encounters -
How many Frigates does it take to switch a 1st rate....

I have been searching for the other thread, but have not found it yet. I will post it here once I do.

3rd rate SOL for me

John Paul
01-28-2014, 00:31
I must admit that having two battle lines of 1st, 2nd, & 3rd rates slowly moving along banging away at each other is my favored choice. Though as any Captain worth his salt will tell you nothing can display your abilities better then commanding a frigate, and taking on an enemy frigate one on one! As Jack would say; "Surprise is on our side!" :rum:

I'm curious though how heavy frigates will play.

I like lopsided engagements. The differences between ships aren't so great that they are insurmountable. Yes, a 1st rate will blow a frigate out of the water long before the frigate has any chance of doing the same, but you have to catch it first, then bring your guns to bear long enough to get a broadside off. Blockade running with a 1st rate is my favorite type of action right now. A frigate engaging a first rater just long enough for a 74 to come help out makes for nail biting decisions. Can the frigate stay engaged long enough for the 74 to show up? Can the frigate inflict enough damage that when the 74 finally gets there, it has a fighting chance? Are you willing to sacrifice the frigate, or stand off out of range until the 74 shows up? Can you safely get your other blockade runners across the game space and out the other side, or do they have to turn back and come to the rescue of the first rater? Putting fresh ships in at different times during the game is more realistic than just pitting one ship against another. If you almost have your opponents ship ready to strike it's colors and you see a new set of sails on the horizon bearing down full sail, it forces you to decide whether to disengage and run, finish off the other ship and turn to meet the new threat, or every type of action in between. I just fought a scenario just like this a couple of days ago and the frigate actually managed to destroy the foremast of the 1st rater. This gave the late arriving 74 a much better chance.

While I fully appreciate the many informed comments previously posted regarding the smaller ships, for me size is everything, British 100 gun triple deckers all the way, HMS Victory in the post as we speak, lol
(better buy some Frenchies as well to keep a balanced set of fleets - damn hadn't thought about that - need pocket money increase....)

I am partial to the big boys............... 1, 2 and third rates.. There is just something about fleet actions that gets my goat. Ships of the line going toe to toe with boarding actions, explosions.............yup love the smell of cordite and british rum in the morning :)

I have always liked frigates. Ships of the line, while great are to my mind slow and ponderous. If I had lived in the era I would have had to think long and hard before accepting a ship of the line even though I know it would have at the time been considered the logical step. That freedom dictated by a frigate would be hard to leave.

Morning Robert.
It never ceases to amaze me how some Captains such as Pellew or Cochrane managed to hang on to their Frigates as long as they did, whilst other Captains got moved to a 50 or 74 as soon as a cruise was over and their Frigate went in for repairs.
Seems that some had no choice about where the Admiralty deployed them!
At least we can pick and choose which ships we prefer to sail.
My personal favourite is a Razee or super Frigate like the American ones. Agility, freedom of command mixed with firepower.
The best of all worlds, combined with the chance for lots of prize money.
Rob.

I lived just outside of Boston for several years -- while there I visited the U.S.S. Constitution often -- I loved "hanging about" on the gun deck and imagining the organized chaos, smoke, and noise when she was in action. Hence I am partial to her and answered the poll above accordingly. Once per year she is towed out of the Charlestown Navy yard around Boston Harbor so that she can keep her commission as an active ship. I have an old watercolor of that event hanging in my painting area. Not surprisingly "Old Ironsides" was my first Sails of Glory purchase.
I've edited the post to add a photo of the watercolor I have hanging over my hobby workbench.

I am a "Tank lover", so anything really big, creates lots of smoke, and blows things up in spectacular fashion are up my alley. Guess you can say I am the ship of the line type of commander. I also like the close , in your face, type of fight so they pretty much fit my play style. I am happy being the anchor of a line with all the big boys so you little guys can run around taking pot shots :P
