1778 - Battle of St Lucia. A squadron of seven ships of the line under Admiral Barrington was engaged by a French squadron of twelve ships of the line under Admiral d'Estaing. Barrington was covering a landing by troops under General Grant which led to the eventual capture of the island on December 28th. d'Estaing first engaged with ten ships but was beaten off. His squadron reformed, was reinforced with two additional ships and attacked for a second time but, again, Barrington's smaller ships fought off the French attack.
