1775 - Thomas Cochrane was born

1798 - HMS Ambuscade (32) captured by the French frigate Bayonnaise (32) off the mouth of the Gironde whilst blockading Rochefort. Captain Henry James was acquitted at court martial, although serious doubts remained as to his leadership and ship handling. Ambuscade became the French frigate Embuscade

1809 - HMS Melampus (36) (built in Bristol close to our old house) captured the French Bearnais (16) 80 miles NNE of Barbuda. From Wikipedia: On 14 December Melampus captured the French brig corvette Bearnais after pursuing her for 28 hours. Bearnais was armed with sixteen 24-pounder carronades and had a crew of 109 men (including 30 soldiers), under the command of Monsieur Montbazen, Lieutenant de Vaiffeau. She fought before striking with the result that she had one man killed and some men wounded, and she wounded two men on Melampus. Bearnais was a new vessel and was sailing from Bayonne to Guadeloupe with a cargo of flour and military stores, some of which she had thrown overboard during the pursuit. The Royal Navy took her into service as Curieux

1814 - Battle of Lake Borgne. Bats from Admiral Cochrane's squadron engaged five American gunboats and the sloops Alligator and Tickler. In the ensuing engagements all five gunboats and the two sloops were captured or destroyed. Two boats were lost, 17 men killed and 77 wounded. American losses were 6 killed, 35 wounded, 86 captured. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Lake_Borgne
