Here are a few shots of the Battle of Valdivia from Partizan which we played the weekend before last.

The Spanish and Chilean squadrons make ready for the frey.

The fort on the island held by the Spanish is the key to the Spanish position and the river which flows up to the Town of Valdivia and which is the objective of Corcoran’s Chilean Squadron.

The Spanish held fort of Niebla on the left of the picture was thus nullified totally from the action.

Having seen the enemy dispositions, the Spanish Commadore now gave orders for his squadron to attack.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Chilean ships hug the coast and give the Spanish no chance to repeat their sucess with the O'Higgens.

The real action starts with a broadsdside on the Spanish Ifignia.

Ifignia also gets a forrard battery shot off at the leading Chilean Frigate as it passes.

With the damage suffered by the Ifignia the O'Higgins now decides to board her and delivers a stinging broadside of her own on the second Spanish ship to arrive on the scene.

General meyhem now ensues as O'Higgins takes a battering from both the other Spaniards.

Mohonsa was the next Spaniard to go having strayed under the guns of San Sebastian, taken out by the San Martin assisted by fire from the fort.

As Lautaro delivers the Coup de Grace to Ifigenia, Proserpina decides to call it a day and runs for the covering fire of her fort. This leaves the estuary to the river Valdivia open to the two remaining Chilean Frigates and the city is at their mercy. Having been joined by the remnants of all the forts abandoned by the garrisons, the city is now taken by the Chilean army which surrenders on the arrival of the news that the fort of San Sabastian has fallen.
