Err actually yes (except the foreign language stuff) over the last thirty years. This list pales besides my non-naval Napoleonic list though. I was President of the now defunct Australian Napoleonic Society for a couple of years back in the 1990's and was Secretary for about seven years. So this period is my "thing":)

As they say, if you don't know the past you're doomed to make the same mistakes again. Things I've learnt over the years
1) Never invade russia...not even in summer.
2) Dont make the Germans angry
3) No-one wins in "Afghanistan", even Alexander couldn't, he just married the biggest warlord's daughter and then moved on to India (please note this isn't a political comment, it's an historical one)
4) People do listen to the big stick
5) Maritime power still makes nations great

Clowes' The Royal Navy are generally the first I read when looking up a British versus all comers battle. Volumes 3 to 6 apply to our period.

For ship data: Brian Lavery, "The Ship of the Line", volume 1, "The development of the battlefleet 1650-1850", Conway Maritime, London 1983, ISBN 0 85177 252 8.

Another gem: Brian Tunstall, "Naval Warfare in the Age of Sail, The Evolution of Fighting Tactics 1650-1815". ed. Dr. Nicholas Tracy, Conway Maritime, London 1990, ISBN 0 85177 544 6.

Niek very good books indeed don't know why they weren't on my original list, seem to have some problems with my cataloguing. The Lavery book second volume on "design construction and fittings" for the ship of the line is interesting but hard going, useful for those who might want to scratch build a ship or who need highly detailed data.

Are there non fiction books on the Napoleonic French navy that are written from the French point of view and are also in English? I just ordered one of the books on Daniel's list via Amazon, Napoleon's Sea Soldiers (Men-at-Arms), by Rene Chartrand. 1990. It's not exactly what I'm looking for, but will provide some useful information at a very low cost.

In the searching process I came across this MA Thesis, from Florida State University. Even though it's not Napoleonic it makes for interesting reading. I thought folks here might be inclined to check it out as well?

The Forgotten Service: The French Navy of the Old Regime, 1650-1789 by Richard Brownlow Byington. I think the list of references may lead to some other titles I'll have to check out.

If folks can recommend titles I'd be happy to learn about them. As an aside I've seen several references pointing out how accurate Patrick O'Brian was in his accounting of the French navy in his Aubrey/Maturin novels.
