Definitely the wrong time period, but may be of interest to all naval wargamers? Items can be preordered directly from Warlord Games. I expect preorders will be available from retail sellers soon as well?

Interesting....I hadn't seen this yet. Many years ago I had a real WWII naval gaming period using the Alnavco rules and 1/1200 ships. It was great fun.

Decent set of rules too

Is this the 'big ship' version of Cruel Seas?

It is

I’ll wager your name is listed somewhere in the rule book?

In the US, the preorders will be available on April 18th, I believe.

Be interesting to hear what you chaps think of it although I have no idea where I could fit in any more ships.
My WW2 Med fleet has no real home as yet.

Rob.

The thing I do not like about Cruel Seas is the length of time you sometimes have to wait between turns when there are many players.

I was deeply involved in the development of the first edition, the WW2 supplement, and wrote the WW1 version and it's supplement

I was more "hands off" for VAS2

Different game.

I do hope they also release a WW1 edition? Saw your rule set when searching Victory at Sea Age of Dreadnoughts.

Different game.

What's a different game?

Me too! I've started to look at what changes would need to be made to get it into VAS2 format. It's not a big job.

That's encouraging. I'll cross my fingers and hope for the best.

Warlord's Victory at Sea. Unless I'm mistaken, it's a brand new game.

Too much like World of Warships and with a high cost to boot. I would rather invest the money in GHQ or Panzershiffe with the abundance of naval rules out there that the odd scaled ships of Victory at Sea can't use.

You are. Warlord's Victory at Sea is Mongoose's 2nd edition of its Victory at Sea rules. I was a developer on the first edition, playtested the second in the early days, did some proof reading on the Warlord edition.

They are the same rules.

1/1800 has been an established naval wargaming scale for many years. But you don't need to buy Warlord model ships, I've never used their Mongoose predecessors with the earlier edition, all my games used my extensive and pre-existing 1/3000 collection

I think 1:2400 is more standard and is almost on the large size at that.

Warlord has a history of using outsized models for its games (Bolt Action for example - ranges look daft with 28mm, look much better with 15mm). My first naval wargaming was done with 1/1200 and 1/1250 WW2 models which were pretty much the standard scale until 1/3000 and 1/2400 came along

I still don't understand Cruel Seas for the life of me. Why would you cap yourself size wise like that . The game system can only go so far and it becomes ahistorical quick with the number of ships being used in a game.

As a set in its own right, covering coastal forces actions, it seems entirely reasonable (but then I'd have to say that having published two very successful sets of coastal forces rules). I guess rule writers can't be blamed if players want to load up their games with too many models - although their publishers might be responsible where they also sell those models

It can be a quite fun game keeping in mind it is meant to be more beer and pretzels style. At Fall-In I played in a "McHales' Navy" scenario complete with characters from the show. It actually represented the small boat actions in the Pacific nicely. A squadron of 6 PT boats raiding a Japanese forward supply base.

Yeah, but how many times can you raid a supply base before it gets old? It seems repetitive. I know, I should never slam something that contributes to the hobby......

I think in 25 years I've only ever played one coastal forces game that liked anything like a "supply base" game. There us as much diversity in CF ( including Cruel Seas) as there is in any other genre

Eric I was just providing an example of what kind of scenarios you can do with it. The scenarios that Warlord puts in their rules are all very generic but there are a variety of RL situations that you can pull from. I played that game and then picked up and read JFK's book PT 109. I really never read much about this aspect of WWII and was surprised how much there was to it, in the Pacific, the Med and the North Atlantic.
