James Tertius De Kay ISBN:

Biography Format:
Hardback Summary:
A Rage for Glory tells about the life of Stephen Decatur, considered by many as the most popular U. S. Navy hero in his time. Decatur came to fame by commanding a raid to burn USS Philadelphia that had been captured after running aground. No less than Admiral Horatio Nelson called it "the most bold and daring act of the age." A good book for light reading.

After reading Eric's post in Historical forum last week I read some more on wikipedia about Stephan Decatur. I was very interested in his story and this book looks like a good read. Thank you for the review and recommendation Bobby. You are an asset to this great site. :salute:

Thank you. Decatur is definitely one of the most interesting persons of his time and my favorite. That's why I chose his picture for my avatar.

a fascinating person, and definitely someone whose star shone brightly, perhaps a little too much so. The loss of the President certainly seemed to affect him somewhat.

If you guys have interest, we could read and discuss the book. I need to finish Six Frigates first, but I would start this one right after.

Thanks for the headsup on the Pirates book, Paul. There's some interesting, contrary reviews of it on amazon. It's now in the cart.

It is still on the *To read list* I would be happy to have an open discussion about it's merits after reading though. :talk:

I will pick this up for just this reason. As you and I discussed on PMs, this book has some interesting and conflicting reviews on amazon. As soon as we finish it, we can do a book review and start a discussion there. Could be interesting. As with the War of 1812, I doubt most Americans are aware of the Barbary wars and what they entailed.

What interests me are the religious overtones and the story told in that light which is relevant to the period.
