From the Crow's nest.

Here are a few random shots from my Basque Roads game.

45993
Captains briefing and charts of the anchorage given out.

45999
The explosion ship goes in passes all its event cards and destroys the Boom.

46000
As it sinks the fire ships close in.

46001
The first fireship fails its ignition test but starts to smoke which panics one of the French ships to cut its cable and drift away.

46002

Soon several French ships are ablaze whilst other Captains cut and run or doggedly stand and fight.

46003
The Frigates now attack whilst Captain Kiwi punching way above his weight, in the Bomb Brig Aetna rains down explosives on both the Fort and the French Admiral's ship Ocean.

46004
Three French Captains doggedly hold the line whilst the rest drift away at whim of tide and winds.

46005
Several run onto the shoals.

46006

Whilst others are lucky and escape up the river.

46007

This ended the night attack of the 11th, and the successful British captains celebrated their victory.

Chris's game. Breaking through the British Blockade.
The french had to get as many ships to the Caribbean Islands as they could.

46011

The Captains make ready.

46012

The French split into two formations and attack the British squadrons.

46013
One lone British Captain boldly holds up the French breakthrough.

46014
The French line crowds in on the Lone British ship.

46015
This solo feat of bravery allows the two Wings of the fleets to come together in one vast melee.

46016
Inevitably ships are lost on both sides.

46017
One French ship breaks through and draws several English ones out of position in an attempt to stop its escape.

This act opened the floodgates and eventually four French ships made their escape. An overwhelming victory for the French this time.

Those splendid pictures fill in a lot that I never had time to take Sven and are certainly better than my overviews. Thanks for that and helping me run the game.
Well worth taking a look at Gentlemen.

My game used six ships per side, 3 x 64s and three large frigates per side, I will try and upload the scenario to the files

Have you got one up your sleeve to play Sven. I would love to be able to put on a game Friday evening as well as Saturday for Chris's double game and then finish up with another one at the end of the afternoon next year.

Thanks to the assiduous work done by Susan, Ling, and our First Naval lord Keith, for which I give my utmost thanks, we now have Doncaster Medals for Participants, and GMs for years three and four. I have tried to place people in these new categories correctly as far as memory serves me. Not far these days I'm afraid. Cast your eyes over the awards and if you notice anything amiss drop me a PM and I will rectify the matter.

For those captain's who took part in the Basque Roads game, here is a programme on the exploits of Captain Corcrane with a section on the Basque Roads at about 35 minutes in. If you can ignore the obvious mistakes with some of the details and the constant use of the Union Flag instead of the Naval Ensign it is a quite entertaining programme if you don't take it too seriously, illustrated with some charmingly nieave cartoon drawings which have a hint of annimation in several places.
