On 12 August 1782, the 28-gun frigate HMS Coventry, under the command of Captain Andrew Mitchell. encountered the 32-gun French frigate Bellone off Friars Hood, Ceylon. Coventry was armed with 24 9-pounder, 4 3-pounder, and 12 swivel guns. Bellone was carried 28 18-pounder and 4 6-pounder guns. After two-and-a-half hours, the Bellone sailed away. Coventry pursued until Bellone reached the protection of the French fleet at Batacaloa. Coventry suffered 15 men killed and 29 wounded in the engagement.
