After 21 years active duty I retired from the US Navy on Friday. We pack up and head to Maryland on the 6th for my new job in Washington DC

Congratulations, and best wishes for the future (although DC might not be a good place to be just now!!)

Congratulations on your retirement. Sounds like you'll be close to the Savage Mill area guys in Maryland and have the opportunity to get in some good gaming.

So you joined the US Navy with 18 years, Steve.

Did you have the option to stay in the Navy or is 21 years of duty a special time to leave?

Think your job on the USS Passadena was a great one, but I know (contacts to GIs in Germany) that US military forces have to make hard compromises to family life and residence.

So I bet you leave the US Navy with mixed emotions.

I hope you made the right decision and get support for your further work (has something to do with military?).

I could have stayed in up to 26 at my current rank (E-8). I had alot of things line up and getting out seemed like the right thing to do....I have a good job at the Washington Navy, yard still working with things I did in the Navy. Yes, I was at boot camp on my 18th birthday.....it was not fun....all my boats spent alot of time at sea....think 87-90 % of the year....so it is nice to spend some time with the wife and kids!

Steve Congradulations on your retirement. This is my 22 year retired from the U. S. Army. I have to tell you it may take some time getting used to working with civilians. So I see now you will be a neighbor since I live in MD. May run into each othe sometime. Again congradulations.

I spend more time in the Wings site so don't get here as often as I should. I have seen the pics of the ships and to me they are good. How is retirement?
