"Damnation, damnation and thrice damnation!" Sir Henry looked around his gathered captains and said, "Confound it (mumble mumble) orders from the Admiralty. what do they know. Damnation, (mumble mumble) bad intelligence, in fact no intelligence and no Ship! The Flagship and HMS Alnwick will continue on for 2 more days then return to port. The remainder under Captain Arkell will make haste and rendezvous, now there's a nice Frog word; R E N D E Z V O U S! Yes go and meet with Africa and make sure that damn convoy gets through. Now make all sail and lets get out of this infernal bay.

The gathered ships headed in their respective directions. 12 hours later the admiral had more news from a passing trader. She had just sailed down river and passed 3 French ships anchored near the shore. One of which was a big 3 decker. Sir Henry felt pleased. He had found them and he would deal with them.

The 2 ships sailed into the estuary just as the sun was rising. There ahead and just of the starboard bow where the 3 French Sail. The were indeed anchored facing upriver and looked like they were or had been making repairs. The flag signalled Alnwick to close and follow, once action was under way then it was independent action until the French were defeated.

Sir Henry noted that there was a gap between a big 80 gun French ship and the large 3 decker, closest to the Royal Sovereign was a 74. Sit Herny decided to head for the gap between the 80 and 3 decker. He meant to rake them and then finish them off. Alnwick would finish what he started.

Under full sail the 2 English Man O'War sailed into the estuary. Sir Henry indicated to his flag captain to close with the enemy and head for the gap. Both broadsides were double shotted as were HMS Alnwick's.

Sovereign broke the line and as she passed her broadsides thundered out.

31161

There was utter devastation on both french ships. HMS Alnwick followed and her broadside shattered the calm again. The French were in disarray, men hurrying to their stations when Sovereign opened fire were blown away as Alnwick fired her guns.

(The lower row of chits both sides were from the rake and first fire I forgot to add in from HMS Sovereign)

As HMS Sovereign passed the flagship Sir Henry noted the third French ship, a 74, had managed to weigh anchor, raise sail and was under way...right towards HMS Sovereigns broadside, now reloaded. Cannon and muskets crashed out as the French fore battery fired in vain.

No chance to baord Sovereign and the French 74 passed each other as HMS Alnwick now added her iron to the French 74's misery.

31173

Fires raging the 74 struck, likewise the French flagship and lead 80 gun 2 decker.

31174

Sir Henry ordered both ships to drop anchor and take stock. HMS Sovereign took control of the french flagship and 80 gunner, whilst Alnwick took control of the French 74.

Prisoners secured, damage repaired what they could fires now out, the small squadron headed back to port. They made a fine sight sailing into harbour. In a little over a month the squadorn had captured a Spanish frigate and 3 French ships.

A magnificent victory there Neil.
Should not be surprised if some honours were not forthcoming for that action!

Questions:
Were Montaigne and Bordeaux kept as part of your fleet?
If a ship strikes and it has an active fire or leak, doesn't it sink?

Points recorded: 8 for each ship and 1 for the commodore.

I always look at the crew numbers left Bob.
If they can carry out the required actions to keep it afloat it will not sink. I f it is subject to a sucessful boarding action it has enough hands aboard to save it, otherwise it goes down. That brings us onto the matter of fire and the chance of it exploding before it sinks?

Rob.

As stated. Aquilon was captured and retained. Montagne and Commerce de M received to much damage (made a random roll) hence one foundered and 't'other was broken up for spares.
