It's a Victory with a new stern, made to be recognizable as a flagship if I ever played a miniversion of Trafalgar.

Magnificent Jonas.
You have produced a fine conversion there.
Must get myself another Victory.
Rob.

Thank you, Rob.

Yes, it is a beautiful model, suiting well to be a flagship.

Jonas, well done! Certainly, stern masks of langton looks great on these boats

TexaS

Thank you, Julián.

They really do. I think Sails of Glory ships with Langton stern galleries arr even better than either of the original.

The only unsolved problem is the sails. I don't like photo etched sails as they're not double-curved but the plastic sails have these large supports to the masts that's not good looking.

Hjl

Great looking ship. Could you try bending the photo etched into shape?

TexaS
08-24-2016, 13:32
The problem is that you can't bend double-curved surfaces. You need a press or to use a round-faced mallet and a hollowing block to make that kind of shape. (Like spherical not cylindrical.) This is probably a little hard in the small size we work. I've done it making metal armor in my youth, but that was a lot easier size-wise.

I have a very small mushroom stake and plannishing hammer which I use for this kind of work Jonas. You don't hit your fingers often, honest.
Rob.

TexaS
08-24-2016, 21:39
I would like to see you try.
I'm afraid the etchings would be lost by the hammering when using steel on steel.

Bligh
08-25-2016, 01:13
Yes you are correct there Jonas.
I had not considered that they had details etched onto the surface. I guess a sandbag and bossing or hide faced mallet would be the best approach then.
Rob.

Nice work, the small differences between this and your HMS Victory repaint are a nice touch!

TexaS
08-25-2016, 04:52
Thank you.

I hoped to make more differenses but couldn't find any interesting things to add like a thin blue line along the quarterdeck or anything like that. I would have liked to have something more to differentiate between them but I'd like some base in history or even pop culture to base it on. (Like the red line on "Surprise"/Rose in Master and Commander)

Perhaps paint the boats a bright colour? There seems to be a gun missing in the middle there.

TexaS
08-25-2016, 06:37
The missing gun is a door.

My Victory have boats painted white with a blue edge.

Thank you. I'm impressed by the iPhone camera which is what I use. We don't always get along, especially when up close, but these kinds of pictures are easy to get good.

TexaS

Yes, that's very true.

On the other hand, it's good at presenting stuff big. I like using it for the scenario description when soloplaying and rules reference.

As Julián expertly spotted, the stern gallery is from Langton. I bought the Royal Sovereign stern gallery and replaced the one on the second Victory.

A better close up of the stern showing that I didn't do it full justice by my painting.

I found that the Victory stern gallery wasn't that much better than the pre-painted. At least not at my skill level. I guess Julián could improve it though.

Bligh
09-14-2016, 11:45
I should not worry too much about that unless your friends like to take a magnifying glass to your work Jonas!
Rob.

TexaS
09-14-2016, 16:43
There are some stern galleries that makes a big difference and is a lot better by Langton and that is primarily the Téméraires, or perhaps most French ships.

The Victory stern gallery is pretty good on the Sails of Glory ship. I exchanged it to make it different from Victory and made the two ships differ a little more from each other.

TexaS
10-06-2016, 08:07
I'm guessing they removed that due to production reasons. The guns are poking through the sides and probably would be hard to fit into the stem piece.

Hjl

What do you use for the rope? Sewing thread?

TexaS
10-09-2016, 10:23
Yes. It's a thin synthetic sewing thread.

Bligh
10-09-2016, 12:32
What I particularly like about it is that you can clearly see the plying in the rope. It looks very realistic.
What method do you use for making it fast around the spars Jonas?
Rob.

TexaS
10-09-2016, 14:05
I drill small holes and tie knots that I secure with superglue.

I also put superglue on the end of the thread to make it hard like a built in needle to make it go through the holes.

Excellent there Jonas, just seen this. Very impressed with your rigging, far superior to my effort. I used cut lengths of nylon brush bristle and glued. Also like your sterncastles, can you buy them individually or did you have to buy the whole model, Ill have to look into Langtons ?

Bligh

Mind you I'll warn you that is is opening a Pandora's box of goodies.:moneygone:

Yes, so far I have only used Langtons for ratlines and dockside buildings, looks like I need to peruse the rest of the catalogue

TexaS
10-11-2016, 07:17
Thank you Chris, and for the reputation.

Comparing your work and mine I can only wish for the speed and commitment you have to finish a complete fleet. My fleet may never be finished at this speed even though Ares is so slow to release new ships.

Yes, Langton is very obliging. I could not recommend them enough.

Jonas, would you mind checking me on some preliminary thoughts on fixing SGN108 and SGN201?

Here's what I have so far... while I'm working on a spreadsheet for all the three-deckers, I'm focusing this only on the ones that have classmembers or near-sisters released.

I think that for anyone who is keen to have the ships exactly right, they are the sort of person who will have honed those skills with other adjustments to models over the years. They should have no problems with this exercise DB.
Rob.

Capn Duff

The modelling part Im ok with, its the getting hold of 5 more Hms Victory sculpts at a reasonable price

Bligh
10-22-2016, 03:00
That consideration has convinced me to make the best out of what I have Chris.
Do I invest in HMS Victories and discard four out of the six three deckers, when most of the games I play in will be fielding unmodified ships as such, or spend the money on more of the new releases.
A no brainer for a pensioner like myself with a limited income.
Rob.

There is another way...

You guys are gonna have to forgive me for the link to a gun site, but it occurs to me that if the technique works for something as complex as an AR15 receiver it should surely work for a miniature-ship hull so you'd only have to sacrifice one Victory making a master and then find a source for masts.

WARNING, NSFW content ahead, I'm only linking this to adapt Boris's technique!

Actually, if you're careful cutting the masts off you may even be able to glue them back on and then use the first casting as your new master copy. No sacrifice, just a little cut-n-repair, if you're lucky...

Technically, once the mold's cast and cured you really only need to keep a master ready in case you need to replace the mold. Depending on ships, for RS and the Umpires you may need to cut-and-stretch behind the catheads to add the extra forward guns--I'll look into this further, but the stretch sections on Ville de Paris and Hibernia are about 3mm each, in addition to everything from Royal Sovereign on needing about a 1.5-2mm stretch from Victory's length if we're going for "idealized".

EDIT: Depending on goals you may need to do this with both an SGN108 and an SGN201. Jonas, apologies for hijacking your thread--thought you might ind the conversion data interesting. :o

It is interesting and a little my own fault for pointing out the shapes when we were discussing extending sculpts. I support this hi-jacking fully.

Adding or subtracting gunports at the stern or stem isn't too hard, but the Hibernia remodel would take three SGN201 Victory models and a stern gallery, either from Langton or a SGN108. That cost would be prohibitive...

Thank you, Julián.

They really do. I think Sails of Glory ships with Langton stern galleries arr even better than either of the original.

The only unsolved problem is the sails. I don't like photo etched sails as they're not double-curved but the plastic sails have these large supports to the masts that's not good looking.

This is why I prefer Rod's white metal sails, I think they look a lot more "alive" than the brass ones

TexaS
10-23-2016, 00:18
Thank you, Sven.

I agree with you on that David. I only have a few ships from Langton and only one finished. It has the white metal sails and that is the best version I'd say, but those would be out of scale on the Sails miniatures.
