Wasn't there some special card pack? How does it differ from the cards that came in the Victory and Constitution packs?

Dan-Sam
07-20-2016, 00:01
At least there are more cards - about 2 cm thick. I didn't open it, but I expect there will be skills even for crew, not just for famous captains.

Can some one scan in the deck of cards for other people to see?

:question:What pack are you talking about chaps?
All I know about are the Victory and Constitution ones.

Today we will have a gaming session, but it will be the first one, so I am not sure if we will use them in the game.

Yes I recognize those cards from the Special packs with Victory, and Constitution.
I was thinking from what Dobbs said that there was another release about which I was unaware. Thanks for clearing that one up Daniel.
Rob.

Dan-Sam

Yes, captain's skills are there too (at least in case of HMS Victory - I don't own USS Constitution). Are Crew cards included in the other Special pack?

Bligh
07-21-2016, 04:16
Yes Daniel they are. As luck would have it I happen to have two packs of Constitution cards!
Rob.

Dan-Sam
07-21-2016, 04:43
So there are only Captain's cards attached to HMS Victory and both decks attached to USS Constitution?

Bligh
07-21-2016, 05:29
No I have two sets for the Constitution because one of my two Constitutions was converted into HEIC Nottingham Dan.
I checked the cards and you seem to have them all on this sheet. The only ones on Constitution that are not on Victory are Captain Bainbridge with Lucky Captain and Iron Captain which I see you have on the picture anyway. What I do not have is the cards for Elite Marines Hold fast and Skilled Quatermaster etc.
The only ones I have in the yellow are Good aim and Well trained gunners. Where did you find the others please?
Rob.

It is obviously something not easily available then, and you will not need me tom send you my spare set of Constitution cards!

You can add to Constitution? the cards Good aim and Well trained gunners.
The Captain abilities are Fast thinking, Intuitive Captain, Iron Captain, Lucky captain, and Skilled tactician.

Those Abilities Decks were rewards in the Kickstarter.

Ares said they may be printed again and was not exclusive to the Kickstarter, but they haven't done so yet.

When you look at those attributes and apply them to any of the famous Captains in Fiction and their crews they posses most of the ones on those cards. No wonder they manage to punch above their weight.

You'd have to choose a few most significant to make their character show but not make them ridiculously overpowered.

There's a thread about suggestions for abilities for captains. I think there were both historical and fictional characters.

Dan-Sam
07-25-2016, 12:11
The most important question is what and who is / was overpowered. Was Nelson overpowered? Drake? John Walker? May be they were, but on every of them were hundreds and thousands of officers with common talent. May be it is the same as in case of pilot aces - only few of them was aces, but most of them just "common" men. And it is same in SoG - in case of one talented captain in fleet (4 or 5 ships?) it's OK, but fleet built from very talented captains is utopia.

TexaS
07-25-2016, 12:50
I would say that Hornblower and Biggles were overpowered.

I wouldn't say historical captains and pilots were but the fictitious that have a long series of books usually "lend" from multiple historical captains and combine the good qualities of all their originals.

Bligh
07-25-2016, 13:14
How many exceptional Captains would you say were at Trafalgar for instance, or went on to become exceptional later?
Rob.

But that's the purpote of literature - show us men and women that could be an inspiration for us! Like Robinson, Robin Hood, Little Prince,...

May be the same ratio like between soldiers and Victoria Cross holders? Just guessing

It might be the purpose of literature but it might not suit the gaming table.

Dan-Sam
07-25-2016, 16:05
One famous ship on the table? I expect a very very clever captain to command a famous ship like Victory. More than a not talented one. When you want to play famous ship, the chance for experienced captain is higher than during playing with sloopes. Of course, it doesn't make sense to play a tiny ship with overpowered captain, but the famous one... Bismarck had an experienced captain too.

PS: No offence I've never tried them, just guessing how to use them.

TexaS
07-25-2016, 16:35
You are still talking about historical captains.

Dan-Sam
07-25-2016, 17:05
No, not in the last post. I can imagine easily to play a 1st rate ship with "ace captain" and rest of the ships without abilities.

May be an example helps:
I can imagine a battle with two big ships (HMS Victory vs. L'Orient for an example) with very experienced captains (2-3 abilities) with 2-3 smaller ships of the line (Temeraire vs. Bellona classes) and another 2-3 frigates (Concorde vs. Amazon). What's wrong with my idea?

Dobbs
07-25-2016, 19:53
Just to mix it up, Nelson wasn't a captain at Trafalgar, Hardy was in charge of maneuvering Victory, Nelson's view was the overall fleet. Maybe there should be Admiral cards?

Bligh
07-26-2016, 01:33
That is not a bad idea Dobbs.
It would come in very handy for our Solo campaign to have an Admiral/ commodore type figure with some strategic traits. Things like, clear signalling, good tactician, good control over his Captains actions. Charismatic Leadership. etc.

"90% of anything is crap" - Sturgeon's Law

There is a very thin line between objectively rating captain abilities and hero worship. If you take all the captains who were at the battle of the No Bikini Atoll, one man stand above all the others, Captain Horatio Huffenpuff! The captain ability cards that came with the Constitution look suspiciously like stratomatic baseball cards boiled down to certain advantages one captain had over a "replacement" captain. Next thing you know, they'll come up with lefty-righty stats. I would rather have the original captain and crew decks apply in a given scenario to certain captains, when warranted. Thats what they did for the Constitution/Guerriere scenario.
