I got my stuff through from Brigade Minis! Some of the houses are a bit rough, but all in all id say its ok for the price.

anyway, this is my initial mock up for the town of fort-on-cliff-by-sea.

and here with an idea for where the buildings might go.

Looking good Hugh, is this an island or board edge town/harbour?

Hjl

Edge of the board. I've learned the hard way not to put large islands in the middle of the table. Tends to become a game of chase them around the island.

Good to see the work in progress Hugh.
I am now getting to the position with mine where I can see the end of the project.

I agree that the houses are a little rough but I like them. They paint up easily and they are good value for the price.
It's not Langton, but it's cheap so you can put your money on the ships. :sly:

Agreed. From eyeball it looks as though monopoly houses would work fine.

I'm working on using a paper clip for a flag pole and small flags for it that I can change out as needed.

I'm thinking of using it as a mid size fort.

I can feel another scenic piece coming on due to your fine headland fort.

I sank a piece of brass tube into the bases of my forts so that I can just slip the flagpoles in and out when I wish to change colours.

Out of curiosity, what were the standard coastal guns in the period? I assume forts used full cannon and about 42lb?

I've been lucky and have worked in the castle. One of the many Henry 8th built to defend England. They where the frist in the U.K. to be built for only guns. wide firing arc and low so they are a small target for returning fire. A number were built. The frist and built in the old style was Falmouth. It was built as an old type tower. The rest this one Southsea and Deal are the best looking ones too day. Portland is smaller but the same type. This is because The Gun-crew live in the town. A bell is set in the middle of the castle for the watch to ring if enemy ships are seen. The thing I love about them is they have chimneys over each gun-placement to let the smoke out. We are lucky to have them and are open to the public.

I maybe wrong, but think they had no standard size of coastal guns. Having been around for hundreds of years the gun type and size changed all the time. Newer and bigger is best. This cost money. So I would think changed as they wear out and they had money.

Dead right Rory.
Many still had old Elizabethan beasts.
Some were recast, but others not.
A lot of Army pieces on field carriages were also used, but many were huge.
However, loading them to max capacity may well have been foolhardy in the least.
Major ports such as Portsmouth Plymouth or Falmouth would have had the best up to date guns.
I expect the same was true of France and Spain. The further from home you got the older and more run down the guns.

42lb full cannon is reasonable? I'm trying to understand the justification of giving a fort with 7 guns a firepower of 5

On the Langton page about Toulon the size of guns are mentioned as 24 lb guns. It was specific guns situated close to the water.

I would guess not being on a rolling deck means you can adjust fire easier. That can account for a little higher fp than mere weight can.

Thanks for the heads up on this one. They make one or four of the old forts/castles. I like the chimneys on the model above the gun casements. Thanks again Rob I have now stared the site.
