Bligh
02-29-2016, 04:36
That's the one DB although it is going to end up as a multitude of different fortifications around the Globe as circumstances dictate. I'm just working out the best way to introduce different species of tree for different settings on these Islands.
Plug in seems the way to go.

Yep, drill tiny sockets and build your trees around cut-down sewing pins or similar-diameter wires is what I'd suggest.

Bligh
02-29-2016, 04:45
Cheers DB.

I wondered about setting very small diameter brass tube into the foam hillsides just to stop wear and tear. Your idea would then work just fine. It would also solve the problem of different nations colours flying over the fort.
Rob.

Or thin rubber--like when you strip an insulated wire, embed a chunk of the sheathing. Easier to find than hair-size brass tube. AND it reuses something you were gonna throw away anyway. :)

If you have the card fort examples from Ares David, it is easy to gauge the angles they suggest as correct.
The number of guns and firepower can be adjusted to the needs of your game.
Without giving too much away, you will see an example of this when I write the April scenario. There i have taken the points for enemy ships in total, subtracted from the Allied points total and balanced it up with a shore battery of approximately the difference. The number of guns in a fort can vary from a fully manned one to an abandoned wreck with a couple of guns manhandled up there from a pirate ship. You also need to remember that Fort guns may not only be much larger than ship based ones with a range of up to two rulers because of the elevation of cliff tops etc, but may well be hot shot, if time has been sufficient to get the ovens up to temperature.
All the factors you put in should be based on the scenario and how difficult you want to make it.
As far as Fort Morro is concerned it has an angle of fire of about 270 degrees if fully manned. An elevated fort on a cliff is very hard to hit from the sea, whilst on on a coastal inlet or islet may be reduced by the Fleet. Again the strength that you invest in it should be sufficient to balance the scenario objectives.

Hi Rob,
Money! I understand, but Aesthetics???? I do not understand! Look around you at market towns. I think of Newark near you. small streets with 2 open spaces for markets etc. Portsmouth harbour is very open with large buildings. Go out-side of the harbour walls and the old streets (not bombed in W.W.2.) are very small. Space for one sometimes two cars only. The "Spit" is a good place to look at, Two small tight streets running to the sea. Weymouth and Poole Old town are two more harbour towns that show an open harbour and close streets.
I do love your work and think it looks great. The above is my take, not yours. So don't let me build your harbour. Maybe one day we could play a game? I would be happy to play with your shore-line and harbour. This is no dig at your work.

The sand bars are not normally there, but were included for the Solo March Scenario. The whole set up cab be transformed as far as the defenses, and size of the port are concerned. I can up the defenses by including the flat Island to replace the volcanic plug shown. That flat Island has two more dedicated batteries commanding the channels. i can also add another medium sized fort to the headland at the rear of the town.

Bottom layer holds an FIC pick and pluck tray with the small components on one side,
and the large island plus fort on the other.
Note the spacers stuck on to stop items colliding in transport.

The Harbour slots in above the tray.

Rob,
Very nice. Did you make the shore-line/harbour to fit in the box. Or where you just lucky to get a box that it all fitted in? I got one and thought it would work, but one little bit of the steel-plate made it not fit. Jane my partner made a bag for my harbour and I cut a small hole in the side of the box. It pokes out about 1 inch and I must slide it into the little hole before laying it flat. As it is only a small bit of steel it still works. If only I had measured it first! I did not need that bit on the harbour plate. :embarass: :erk:

Nice Models Julian,
Its the scales? The first one does not say. I think the 2nd one is 1-610 Am I right????
Rob,
I think that the rows of Langton house's would work for the town. As for Mount Saint Michel it's self You may have to build it yourself. It would be great looking model.
I have said before, We are playing Naval games. Land and islands are frames to some games we play not the centre point, like land games. We can get sucked into spending lots of money and time on them. Mostly they get in the way (Good thing) of the game. I'm only saying think about it first! A bought large fort and some house's on an island would work just as well and look just as good on the table doing the same job as a model of Mount Saint Michel. No one has make a exact copy of any town, port or island that I know off.

If you go onto Rob Langton's site- 1-1200 Napoleonic ships. Click on 1-1200 scale buildings. Go to the bottom of the page, you will find a number of pages called "Diagrams" Metal, Resin 1 & 2 and shoreline etc. They will show you drawings of all the pieces. Not photo's but good drawings which will give you the idea of each piece.
Hope this helps. My harbour and town used most of them.
