Captain Phillip Dayton stared down at the logbook before him and shook his head.
“How do I explain this to their lordships”” if not for Captain Grimstead of the Grimsby Town and his crew to corroborate the story no one would have believed what had taken place a couple of hours ago.
Enroute to join the rest of his new Sqn Capt Dayton newly commissioned as Captain and with a new Crew on board HMS Renown had noticed a sail behind them for two days, it never came closer and so he decided to investigate, HMS Revenge has turned about and made her way back towards the sail.
Soon it was noticed that the sail belonged to a French 74, further observation showed they were alongside a British flagged Merchantman, the Grimsby Town and longboats were seen in the water.
Captain Dayton had ordered the ship to clear for action and he headed to the relief of the merchantman, just as the wind changed to blow directly at them putting Renown in irons.

Turn 4 Renown turn to S/board going into Irons again, Timoleon turn towards Renown

Turn5 Renown helmsman has a Left/Right moment and steers the ship to Port due to being in irons and previous card played, much to the Captains consternation, Timoleon turns further to S/board coming towards Renown. The Merchantman gets under way.

Turn6 Renown swings to Starboard, Timoleon also turns slightly Starboard, what was the Frenchman thinking?

Turn 7 Renown in Irons is blown to Starboard, Timoleon with a leak, fire and a mast blown away also moves to S/board

Luckily Renown is reloading

Turn8 Renown turns again to s/board, Timoleon, stops the fire and repairs the leak and pumps out one water damage, unfortunately with the number of actions available and the repair crews stopping the leak, Timoleon still is missing a mast and erratically turn to starboard, not a good move.
Here a dice was thrown to see who would move first Odd French, even British, die roll was a 6, so Renown moved first

The merchantman moves away from the fight trying to escape.

Turn 9 Renown again rakes Timoleon, with 10 x B damage Pic 11 & 12 Timoleon strikes, but Renown gets entangled with Timoleon’s shot rigging. The Merchant moves further away, but panics and turns to starboard

Captian Dayton dipped the quill into the ink to write his action report, thank goodness for the freed crew of the Grimsby Town, their Captain had watched incredulously as HMS Renown had dismasted and turned the Timoleon into a shattered wreck without taking a single loss. Luckily the French Captain was now a “Guest” of the Royal Navy as no doubt something very unpleasant awaited him once this loss would be reported to the French high command.
Captain Dayton shook his head again “ Not a single shot fired in return” he began to write the report of the action.

OK I realize I made a Faux Pas here and got the first missions wrong way round, but hopefully this brings me back on course. This AAR was for the first Fleet mission for Jan. The mission already published I have re-named and that will be my AAR for the Privateer campaign.
So apologies to Neil but this makes me now fully up to date for both first solo missions, Ill make sure I don't mess up again .

No problem Chris, loved the action all the way through; including your misdirection of the French ship by your impromptu turn to port and nearly off the table!

I'll post the results ASAP.

What a great battle, well done!
Poor Timoleon took a heavy beating (by the way, could you show us some more photos of her? Very interesting look!)

Jolly well done Captain Duff. You have schooled your protegee Captain Dayton well.
You are beating me at my own game here!
Two rakes and no return fire.
We must go for stern rakes in our next adventure,
Bligh.

Hi Richard, glad you liked it, it was strange game, I did think i had messed up when I had a left & right moment, but it turned out ok.
Ill get some more pics done tomorrow, but basically Timoleon is a Commerse de Bordeaux Temeraire class with the hull painted a dark red as she was at the Battle of the Nile.
Gives me a couple of extra ships for my French fleet to go with Temeraire and America
