Anybody see a reason why Thorn couldn't be used for USS Hornet?

It depends on how historically close you want the two to be. There are a lot of differences between Thorn and Hornet. Hornet was a bit larger, flush decked (while Thorn has a quarterdeck), and was built as a brig. In 1810-1811 Hornet was converted to a ship and had her 9 pounder guns replaced with 32 pound carronades. If you are intending on using Thorns firepower stats, the ship rigged, carronade armed Hornet would be way underpowered.

However, if you are not concerned with historical appearance and armament differences and just want something to use, why not.

Since most of the Ares models do not match up well with the War of 1812 U. S. Navy, I use them for U. S. Navy ships around 1800 as they match up much better for that period. I did a thread on the subject:

If you customize the ship log and the card that is placed on the mini - one that better represents the firing arcs and wind attitude borders of the desired ship, the mini practically becomes superfluous. Therefore, you can play most any ship of the period. This is especially true if your playing with folks who don't care about the historical accuracy of the minis. The folks for whom I run games simply want to distinguish friend from foe, and readily identify their own ships. Jim (Nightmoss) developed an elegant solution to the friend-vs-foe situation - different color pennants placed atop the mainmast.

Now that's another useful idea Eric.
I will adopt that one myself as I rig each ship.
Thanks to Jim for that one.

This is a thread from this summer with my then finished British ships. Not that many more finished by now. I concentrated on the French and my Swedish frigate conversion until my hand broke.
