Acasta, Newcastle and Leander encountered Constitution and the prizes Levant and Cyane off the Cape Verde islands. Levant was run aground and recaptured. Constitution and Cyane escaped in poor weather.

(** Acasta was having a pretty good war in the Americas, taking or being involved in the taking of 42 prizes up to this point)

Also, in 1854, March 11th saw the first deployment of an RN steam fleet as Admiral Napier took 15 ships from Portsmouth to the Baltic (one of my favourite and oft-overlooked campaigns, and an excellent example of the leverage of seapower, the so-called "Crimean War" effectively being won at sea in the Baltic)

[Constitution and Cyane escaped in poor weather.

Along with the bungling of the British Captains. Even James in his works described it as "the most blundering piece of business recorded in these six volumes."
