During the Napoleonic Era, dueling was often the way for gentlemen to settle disputes or insults to their honor. The officers of the U.S. Navy were no exception. Between 1798 and 1848, two thirds as many officers died in duels as in war. Attached is an interesting on-line paper on the subject:

Fortunately, we gentlemen have evolved beyond this method and settle our disagreements at the Anchorage by other means!

My usual approach to disagreement-solving is a dagger up the strap -- but then: "Honor is a thin cloak against the chill of the grave."

Remember the old addage gentlemen. The pen is mightier than the sword. But only if it is a very sharp pen and a very short sword.
Bligh.

Just be careful not to take a knife to a gunfight!

That's why I attack from behind, and when I'm not expected. >:)

Sir, such behavior would never be tolerated in His Majesty's Navy! Or even amongst the officers of the U.S. Navy. You definitely must associate with that scoundrel Jean Lafitte.

Notice the right hand coming out from his cape:

It's only illegal if one gets caught. >;)

Pity there's not a website for making one's own pirate flag -- I had an idea for once I've not seen anywhere else: A skull with crossed saber and pistol underneath, surrounded by a shark's jaw.

It would make a great avatar.

A bit like this, but with a pistol instead of one of the sabres?

Pretty-much -- only make the jaw a *little* less realistic, so it doesn't cause me panic attacks. (Hint: June 20, 1975, was a *really* bad day for me.)

The music I can handle. My problem... well, let me borrow a line from _The Matrix_: "Unfortunately, no one can be *told* what the problem is -- one must *experience* it for one's self."

It's really interesting how honor is commonly forgotten in war acts, but not in individual acts.

Indeed -- in time of war, Law isn't the only factor which stands silent.

There are times when I start to think society would be more civilized if the institution were resurrected...

I think you will find this film is more ante-duelling. As in the end the duelling is more important than honour
