My duaghter and i measure from the dot at the base of each arc to the edge of the enemy models base itself, this is mainly to avoid moving the ships due to touching the sticky out bits.
This unfortunately means small ships have the same foot print as large ones i suppose but were pretty happy with it.
How do you measure yours?

I measure from the little dot on the relevant broadside to the mainmast to estimate range. :minis: - but I think it doesn't really matter so long as both sides are using the same protocol!

I measure from the red to the enemy ship . both sides (teams, players, etc.) use the same measuring rules it should be fine.

From the dot to the enemy's ship base.

Red dot to the ship's base. As our German friend above I follow the rules. I haven't found any reason to home-rule that one.

Dot to base. Given the scale abstraction in the game already, I have not felt the need to change.

With the right audience, I would enjoy trying various house rules, but with our group, I try to keep things relatively simple.

As others have stated from the Dot to the Base is the easiest way to make it happen!!

Im glad our method of dot to base seems to be the prescribed method of most. Its always good to know your sailing in the right direction!

I asked Sue to make a special ruler to determine short range and grape/chain shots. I will have her take a picture and will post it. It comes in handy when measuring within a cluster of ships.

Dot to base is the book rule but more experienced naval gamers are more accustomed to mainmast to mainmast and could certainly make it a house rule. This actually came up at my session at Rapier as one of the players mentioned that he was used to measuring that way in other games.

The fire arcs makes measuring from the dot an almost necessity. If measuring to the mainmast you make those arcs a little tighter, which I know some would like.

Mast to mast would definitely make it easier when a bunch of ships are gathered. I guess you could use each mast of the firing ship to determine which arc is in play. I won't be deviating from RAW, but there are times checking can be difficult.

I always use firing arc to stand post in Wings of Glory, rather than measuring to the base, as it makes the game more challenging.
In Sails of Glory, I measured from dot to main mast, for the same reason, but I think to the base is ok.
