Welcome to the Anchorage, Michael. I think that you will find that 'Sails of Glory' fits the bill.

Welcome aboard, Michael. :salute:

SoG is a lot of fun, and attractive to many different types of players. The rules scale to various levels of complexity, and with house rules, to greater degrees of realism. We have a solo campaign going on utilizing solo rules developed by members here: http://sailsofglory.org/forumdisplay.php?41-2015-Solo-Campaign

If you ever care to join our year of adventure, let us know, and we'll be happy to get you set up.

Welcome aboard! :salute:

I'd say frigates is the sweet spot for Sails of Glory, but both bigger and a little smaller works.

Welcome Michael, now I quite like the game, however what I have found.
Frigates and Sloop action will be fast and furious, neither ships can take much in the way of damage, if playing advance rules, a fire or leak may well see you off after one or two broadsides.
A lot of people say the game would be better suited to this type of action. I agree, however I personally prefer the SoL and the greater punishment they can take which gives a longer game. Not played many large games ie more than 4 SoL per side but hope to soon to see how larger fleet actions would work.
Either way enjoy the game it is fun and easy to pick up and you don't have to go through chart after chart.
Of course this is just my humble opinion :)
