Testing, testing... tried posting an intro topic a few days ago and was told it had to wait for moderator approval.
How long do these typically take? :p

Which it's coming, isn't it?!?!

Anyway, onto my introduction then:
Twenty or so years ago, while I was a teenager, I was into all sorts of gaming (cards, miniatures, board, etc). As typical, girls/college happened and I've woken up in my mid-30s, a yuppie suburbanite father of four, and I'm starting to rediscover my love for gaming while trying to figure out how to properly nerdify the next generation. Quite apart from that, in the meantime I developed a HUGE fanaticism for all things historical fiction, particularly Napoleonic naval. Hornblower, Bolitho, Ramage, Sharpe, etc, etc... but none of them possibly compare to P'OB. I've probably read or listened to each book in the Aubrey/Maturin series 5-10 times, and would happily do so for the rest of my life if I wasn't afraid of finding something new which doesn't pale in comparison.

As a part of my love for naval fiction, I've actually taken up sailing as a prospective hobby, having taken a beginning sailing course and rigged my grandfather's old boat to sail around some inland lakes. With another few summer's worth of practice I'm hoping to buy my own boat for weekend cruising on Lake Michigan.

Anyway, I'm currently living in the Chicago/Aurora area of Illinois, stumbled onto the Sails of Glory hobby recently, and it looks to be right up my alley. Not sure of the gaming environment around me, or even whether I'll still fit in with that crowd anymore, but this game looks to be a perfect combination of all the things which have obsessed me throughout my life.

Glad to be aboard.

Hi Jesse,

Welcome aboard.

You should be good to go regarding registrations. I was away with work the past two days, but processed all new registrations this morning. If you have any problems, please let me know.

I am from Chicago - Southside. Due to work, we're in central Illinois at present, but we're home often. We have a member from the Aerodrome - sister site for Wings of Glory - living in your area. We game at his place at least once per year, drawing folks from northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. We also gather in Rockford periodically, and are starting to play in Bloomington, about an hour-and-a-half from your the Aurora area.

We're working on solo-play, and will launch a year-long solo campaign in January. Check out this forum for info: http://sailsofglory.org/forumdisplay.php?38-2014-Solo-Campaigns

Cheers,
Eric

Greetings Jesse. Welcome to the Anchorage. If you've not already done so I encourage you to check out the solo rules development thread. Solo rules work very well and there's more coming in 2015.

See, I should have known Eric would pop in before I finished this post. Sorry for the 'solo' duplication.

LOL. Maybe I didn't emphasize it correctly in my previous post... with four kids eating me out of house and home, there's not a farthing with my name on it, let alone a few quid.
Now that the press-gang has (hopefully) freed me from their clutches (for a few hours at a time) I'll be happy to buy a round once I've collected some prize money. :drinks:

Yes, yes... I'll admit that we've let our passions get ahead of our common sense, although I refuse to take all the blame. Afterall, nobody really expects #3 to turn into #3 and #4 at the same time! We have two boys, 7 and 4, and twin daughters now five months old.

Gaming time has never been more scarce, nor as dearly needed. My brain (and pocketbook) is stretched beyond thin, and I'm pretty sure my hair will be a distinguished gray before we get through this winter.

Congrats on the Little Ones, Jesse.

Please join us on our solo-play outing starting in January. It is a great way to get some gaming in with others, even though we're spread out globally.

I will keep you informed of any get-togethers in or near Chicagoland.

I'm imagining some solo scenarios where I can do all of the on-table action within a couple hours over a weekend, then do the overall strategy-decisions and AAR stuff anytime I'm in front of a computer? This sounds ideal for my circumstances.

Do you have a list of the materials needed in order to partake? (Or a topic regarding the details you can link me to?)

Basic chart/rules are here in the files section: http://sailsofglory.org/downloads.php?do=file&id=84

Rules and Background discussion is here: http://sailsofglory.org/showthread.php?2530-Solo-Campaign-Rules

Ralf came up with some additional rules for sailing to stationary objects (not sure if these have been implemented in the 'official solo rules'?): http://sailsofglory.org/showthread.p...ember-Campaign

Eric will be distributing further information concerning the 2015 campaign in the near future. All of the solo scenarios have been geared towards practice and formulating what will work best for a full year campaign.

Here is an example of a solo mission I flew in a solo campaign on the Aerodrome. It was written by some guy across the pond named Skafloc.

Here is Neil's scenario: http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/showthread.php?14270-Over-the-Trenches-The-Final-Months-Mission-2-Never-volunteer-!

Here are my associated AARs:

Part 1: http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/showthread.php?14771-AAR-OTT-Final-Months-2a-There-and-Back-Again
Part 2: http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/showthread.php?14920-OTT-Final-Months-2b-Can-you-hear-me-now

Each month, a participant will offer a scenario, and all of us will play it, writing our AARs to share with each other. The style of the AARs is varied based on personality, etc. of the players. There will be a few guidelines regarding how to write the results at the end of the AARs for record keeping purposes, but other than that, each player can write the reports how (s)he desires. The campaign will focus on British and French engagements, all loosely drawn from history, i.e. the scenarios do not have to be actual reenactments. As can be seen in the example above, the mission adapts historical events to our gameplay.

Here is an example of a WoG mission from the same campaign that I wrote in which you can see a similar adaptation: http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/showthread.php?16694-Over-the-Trenches-The-Final-Months-Mission-8-Assault-and-Battery
