1797 – French Revolutionary Wars: A naval battle off the coast of Brittany between two British frigates and a French ship of the line ended with over 900 deaths when the latter ran aground.

This was the famous "Droits de l'Homme" action following the failed expedition to Ireland, in which HMS Indefatigable and HMS Amazon pursued the French 74 Droits de l'Homme. In fact both the French ship and the frigate Amazon ran aground and were lost. More details on this action, fought in atrocious weather, can be found here:
