Im going to introduce my 6 yr old daughter to wargaming thru SoG.
My first thoughts are to:

1) let her choose which speed she wants to use from the 3 on the card she uses.
2) not to use wind until she has a better grasp of the basic basics.
3) to use the full broadside for every shot for the same reason above.

Does anyone else have any suggestions? Being new to sails myself i could use the advice.
Cheers, Steve

I've had a couple of very fun sloop-vs.-sloop games with my 6 year old.

I think we played the basic rules pretty much as-is. But I did help him with a lot of it. For example, helping him figure out whether his facing was green, yellow or red; reminding him when he was reloading; showing him how to measure and check the various arcs; suggesting whether he might want to do a sharp turn or straighter move in a given situation; etc.

I would say he generally understood the idea behind these things, but was happy to have some help with the details and mechanics.

And of course every kid is different...

All those ideas are sound Steve. I play with my 8 year old daughter and loose rules have helped with her introduction. Have fun.

Cheers paul.
Streamlining the rules further for little ones just removes those long pauses that can lose a child sometimes.

I will post how it goes folks.

I would definitely stick to playing one card at a time and only ball ammo.

Since you're not using wind, I suggest only using the orange arrows - less drastic consequences of movement.

As experience is gained, I would add, in order, different broadsides, wind attitude (only using battle sail settings), sail settings, planned movement, ammo selection. I would add one at a time for a game or two. The goal is longevity, I assume, so there is plenty of time to ramp things up as desired.
