Just finished watching the Gen Con video report from the folks at Shut Up and Sit Down. Beyond the usual game previews they had a conversation with Rob Daviau (the designer of Risk Legacy).
His new game sounds like something I'll be looking to pick up and I think a number of folks here might also be interested. It's called SeaFall and it's basically a 4X board game set in the 16th century. Here are a couple of links to check out. Not due out until 2015 and no Kickstarter expected.

It looks like it might be interesting.
Here's a podcast that includes an interview with the game designer.
I will keep my eye on this one.

I've never had a chance to play Risk Legacy but from all I've heard it's an incredible experience. The "legacy" system changes the board, the cards, includes sealed envelopes, etc. Sounds exciting and very unique. I've read, but know nothing about the system being applied to the game Pandemic. It's also due out next year and although a contemporary game still promises to be extremely exciting and challenging.

Did you post a link somewhere in this message, please, Eric, because I cannot find it?
Thanks for pointing that out, David: http://www.whodaresrolls.com/podcast-episode-10-the-bumper-birthday-episode/
Has anyone played Francis Drake. Bob and Beth taught us it at Origins. It, too, is a fun game, though not 4X: http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/140603/francis-drake
So my phrase "4X Game" has become common-usage now....

No, but I've been using that term since at least the 1980s. Emrich was just the first to *publish* it.
