So here is the first SoG AAR from Origins 2014

It was a scenario hosted by Eric (7eat51) handling a battle between two lines of ships

The game started with basic rules for the first few turns to get the new sailors familiar with the rules. Soon later Eric added sail setting, two planed maneuvers, different kind of ammo, etc.

We didn’t use crew action for the battle, because there were only 180 minutes for the game and explanation of the game mechanics.

This is a picture of the gaming table

Eric (standing in the middle), Susan his wife to the left with the three French captains (guest). To the right you can see the First Sealord (Keith) in person.

Here you can see Ann (MisDomingo) on the right side.

The players already decided which ship to command.

Eric asked us to split up the ships in division and gave us the opportunity to deliberate every third turn about the tactics.

Here is the setup and the battle order.

(Fred had the idea with the little flags in the picture and I copy this for my AAR. Thank you comrade.)

The wind came from the right side. Both lines encountered each other (look at the arrows) and the RN had the advantage to bring their ships reaching to the wind the moment they wanted two.

The French had two divisions lead by the two 1st rates.

I commanded Le Swiftsure and the Genereux. The flagship of the division was the Imperial in front of my ships. :minis:

The 1st rates went with full sails and the other SoLs with battle sails. So we were able to stay in the line without the danger of a collision.

The general French plan was, to hold the line until we had passed all RN ships.

Unfortunately I didn’t remember all the names of the ships of the battle. The resolution of my pictures isn’t that good.

The first exchange of fire between the leading ships.

Eric explained what would happen.

I really liked his answer on the questions: “When do I have to decide to fire or not to fire? Who has to announce the fire first?”
Eric: “It’s a gentlemen’s game. You make this decision. If you want to fire or not, just say it if you’re asked for. Do not depend on the behavior of your opponent.”:hatsoff:

Michael took over the command of the leading and already badly damaged British 3rd rate. He accompanied the different battle actions with his little guitar.
Thank you Michael for playing “The yellow rose of Texas” for me.
My god, we had so much fun in this game.

On this picture you can see an interesting detail of the Origins SoG games.
The special ship mats , Eric & Susan created for gaming. We were able to keep record of damage, sail status etc., with non-permanent pens.

The most brilliant & brave action of this battle. Keith’s ships went with the wind, tried to break into the French line and to destroy the enemy ships with raking shots.
He used the advantage of the wind direction for this maneuver.:salute:

Unfortunately the Commerce de Marseille turned to the left and expected the Britsh 3rd rate with a broadside.
…and the advance wasn’t leaded by the HMS Royal Sovereign.

You know: The ship with the bigger burden goes first. If the burden value is equal, the ship that has the better wind conditions goes first.
So in my opinion the HMS Royal Sovereign had optimal chances to breach into the enemy line and to successful end this attack. I don’t know why Keith didn't consider this in the setup. Maybe the brilliant idea came during the battle.

The badly damaged leading French ship dealt out a last close range rear side salvo.

Keith’s 3rd rate is gone, so did the leading French 3rd rate.

I turned around my two 3rd rates to avoid raking shots from MisDomingo’s Division.:steer:

The salvo of my Temeraire ship Genereux finished off Micheals 3rd rate.

The ships split up for single battles.

The gamers who lost their ships of the line were able to resurrect with frigates.

I spilt up my ships to get into a better shooting position.

The Genereux catched most of the broadsides from MisDomingo’s division that had turned around to get back into battle.

You can see how much distance the 3rd rate HMS Impeteux had gained to the following, slow 1st rate (with the red dice on starbord).

http://sailsofglory.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=10379&d=1404306972

Genereux was destroyed and HMS Royal Sovereign had to surrender due to the massive crew losses.

The big 1st rates are more vulnerable with crew hits, then with damage points.

The end of the game.
RN had lost two 3rd rates and one 1st rate.
French Navy had lost two 3rd rates.

Because of the two remaining French 1st rates, one of them still undamaged, Eric announced the victory to the French side.

A well hosted, amazing battle.

It was the first time, that I saw 1st rates in a battle of lines.

Thank you for the chance to participate in this game, Eric. :thanks:

Great pictures (I'd already peeked at them in your album)!! Very nice description of the battle as well. It sounds like everyone enjoyed themselves and learned much about SoG from the event. Thanks!

Great Sven.
Even more people with names and a good looking battle to boot.
I really must take some time out to give all my ships name cards and colours.
That makes following the action so much easier.
Thanks for another insight into what has gone before.
Rob.

You're welcome.

About the names...

That's the point, Rob.

Imagine me during Origins 2014 - taking a lot of pictures and try to name the ships involved in combat some days later... :help:

I can imagine Sven!
I can't even remember six ships the following day, never mind the poor crew members who have to try and follow it here.
I have seen several good ideas whilst trawling these old AARs etc, but yours seems the most simple and least time consuming to emulate.
All I need is one card and flag for each of my 30 odd ships, and I can use it time after time.
Thanks to all who have given me inspiration on the Anchorage.
Rob.

Sven every bit as much as I remembered the fantastic games at Origins 2015 hosted by Eric and Susan. misdomingo was on my side at least twice if I recall correctly, definitely for the only time we won convincingly with the British (getting a certain spy and his good lady to safety). Great games and bring back great memories.

Yes, Ann (misdomingo) is a good captain.

Her division (1st + 3rd rate) nearly wrecked mine completely (2 x 3rd rate).
