Many readers will be familiar with Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square, but as I was driving back from Portsmouth yesterday I was reminded of the other "column" - actually the Nelson Memorial - that stands on the top of Portsdown Hill overlooking Portsmouth and the naval base. For anyone visiting the city and the naval museums it is a short drive to the top of the hill to see it, and it stands close to Fort Nelson (the Royal Armouries museum - itself well worth a visit, where you can see bits of the Iraqi "supergun")

I didn't get to Portsmouth when I was in England. I hope next time.

Thanks for the picture. Doubt I will ever get to that Portsmouth.

We aren't a million miles away - if you ever do get to make it across the pond give me a shout. I'd be happy to show you around, or "detail off" one of the local Pompey wargamers :)
