Many readers will be familiar with Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square, but as I was driving back from Portsmouth yesterday I was reminded of the other "column" - actually the Nelson Memorial - that stands on the top of Portsdown Hill overlooking Portsmouth and the naval base. For anyone visiting the city and the naval museums it is a short drive to the top of the hill to see it, and it stands close to Fort Nelson (the Royal Armouries museum - itself well worth a visit, where you can see bits of the Iraqi "supergun")
