It was love at first sight.

The series 1 Temeraire ship of the line Commerce de Bordeaux.

Solved my first two games with this beauty, but there was one detail that hurt my eyes everytime I looked at my temporary flagship.

The big white flag of the House of Bourbon. :bleh:

Step 1 to convert the ship into a reputable member of the French revolutionary fleet is to paint carefully the tricolor flag of France on the white underground of the former flag.

Carefully - and don't forget the rearside, please.

Step 2 is to change that ugly black bow figure into a golden display of Marianne.

Step 3 is to paint the boring white rudder in the color of patriotic red. (...so that everyone can see it from a distance. :smack:).

Step 4 is to make a scan of the former ship card, change the name with a graphic programm and print it (with a better colour printer the mine, please.)

Rename the Commerce de Bordeux to TIMOLÉON like they did in 1794.

Step 5 is the same action like step 4 with the damage box inlay.

Have fun with your very French ship now and wait for your series 2 flagship. :salute:

From the wiki:

Commerce de Bordeaux was a Téméraire class 74-gun ship of the line of the French Navy. She was funded by a don des vaisseaux donation from Bordeaux.

Renamed Timoléon in February 1794, she took part in the Battle of the Nile under captain Louis-Léonce Trullet. In the confusion of the battle, her rudder was damaged by misdirected fire from the neighbouring Généreux. She fought for three days, eventually running aground and set on fire by her crew. She exploded around noon on 2 August, the last fighting French ship of the battle.

Very well done! Is the new ship card printed on regular paper or slightly thicker card stock? (I've used typing paper for the pirate ships and it has a tendency to curl up under the clear plastic shield) :salute:

:thanks:

First print experiement with regular paper and my poor printer. I laminated it, too.

Had no problem to put it into the base, etc...

I want to repeat this experiment in a copy shop with thicker paper and better colours.

Nice one Sven,
I have done something similar for a couple of frigates and SoL for both sides.
I shall now look for another Commerce to rename :)

Great job Sven!

I have no doubt that you'll be getting Orient from series 2 :minis:

What graphics program did you use for the ship mat and card?

I used the (gratis) version of the Adobe Photoshop for the data import via scanner.

All changes were made by the standart paint programm (Windows).

You have some good ideas Sven. I might use different colored rudders to more easily I.D. my favorite playing ships, or by nationality. Thanks.

Hi Folks

Just spotted this tread, yes, I know, it takes me a while some times.

Regarding the peaper, maybe matte photographic card might be better.

I plan on doing something similar reflagging French Ships into the Royal Navy. I have a soft spot for the 4 Orion Class Battleships of the 2nd Battle Squadron of the WW I Grand Fleet and, as it turns out, Orion, Thunderer, Conqueror and Monarch were all 3rd Rate 74 Gun Ships of the Napoleonic era. So, I just migh have to make up a Napoleonic 2nd, (White, I guess), Battle Squadron. I can use Nightmoss' idea of brass pennants to ID them, but all flying White Ensigns.

Cheers

Brad
