For those who are using the wooden Range Rulers how are you finishing them? Painted like the cardboard ones? How well do they hold up under latex craft style paints? Will that warp them to any measure? Just stain them? Looking for suggestions!! Thanks in advance! :salute:

Going to stain them when I get the corrected rulers in.

Scott did a fine job on the wind indicator here - http://sailsofglory.org/showthread.php?2104-Wooden-Attitude-Indicator&highlight=rulers

I think something similar on the ruler would work well. I thought about linseed oil, but the examples of stained components do look nice.

I've actually been thinking about trying to find an oak stain for mine, something to make 'em looks like they're actually cut from old hull timbers. Then I gotta figure out appropriate "simulated aging" to make 'em look a quarter-millennium old...

I posted some work I've done on the old rulers and the AI here: http://sailsofglory.org/showthread.php?1623-Anchorage-Accessories-added-to-the-site&highlight=ruler

Haven't had any opportunity to work on the new ones; too damn cold in the basement to be doing much of anything right now. Cheers!

Here's an update on how the new range rulers look plain, stained and stained with inking highlight. Sorry for the dust in the photos. Winter and static electricity are very difficult to control and right now the dust is everywhere. Cheers!

OK -- how does one do the colored-in bits?

I have an old style ink pen with small enough nibs that I can 'draw' the red ink into the cut away sections of the wood. Staining first works to seal the wood so it doesn't bleed and make a mess. All the inks are from the local Michael's or hobby shops.

Looks really good Jim!

Once sealed, you can also fill the engraved details with regular old hobby paints. Wipe off excess paint from the surface, leaving the engravings colored in.

I'll have to try that when I can use the spray sealer outdoors again. Great idea!

I used Varathane's Golden Mahogany. http://www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/varathane/premium-wood-stains

They look Great Jim!

I had a comment from a player that the cardboard rulers worked better than the wood because of the color, now here's a solution!

The color on the cardboard rulers is handy, but it will not help much when those rulers get worn out. I learned that lesson with Wings of War.

Umm, playing the game. It did not take long for them to start to warp really bad and the printed laminate paper to start to peel from the card core.

Wow, I'm amazed. Mine have had some pretty heavy use over the years (club nights, shows, my kids and their friends - who are rather less than careful on occasion) and they look as good now as when they came out of the box. Perhaps you had a duff printing or something?

Perhaps, but I've several do that... but I run a lot of convention games.

Similar problem. Doesn't help when a number of the players like to munch chips and other greasy items while gaming. Paper just absorbs too well....

I really would like to ban food from the table, and will definitely have folks put their drinks on the ground. I think when I run the longer games at Origins, we'll take a 10 minute break in the middle to let people munch, if desired. I might put wipes on the table when they return. I can sleeve cards, but I do want the other components to last awhile.

Lack of discipline

Or lack of consideration. :erk:

That's right Kris. Never use your sleeve to wipe your mouth. That's what the tablecloth's for.

Or those fancy newfangled "napkin" things which don't risk disturbing everything ON the table when you use 'em... :p LOL

And all this time I thought we were supposed to use the lace ruffles at the end of our sleeves!

Obviously not, otherwise they wouldn't be wearing it. :)

I'd suggest being sucked into machinery a few times would disabuse them of it, but I rather suspect they'd only be able to go through the gears once (like a FIAT transmission). >;)

I was asked to pass this note by an acquaintance Chris.
Bligh.

Sirrah!
Please explain to me how any gentleman of standing would possibly come to be in the same building as any of those Industrial Revolution contraptions, let alone the same room.
You don't see anything like that around The Palace at Whitehall, Buckingham House, The Admiralty, Horse-guards or Boodles, thank the Lord. One might almost be mistaken for a fellow in trade otherwise. If you must inspect your investments so closely, buy shares in the South Seas Company instead, and in any other circumstance if you are afraid of your lace getting caught up or soiled, have your man hold it out of harms way whilst you carry out your business.

Brummel.

As far as the range rulers go, i must add a couple to my next order, as they will float better on the wine which keeps flooding the gaming table.
Thanks for providing all these thoughtful extras Keith.
Rob.

So that's the reason for the ship's raised bases, to keep them out of the wine! Splendid!

And do tell the friend that a little ruffles on the shirt would be a nice addition but by no means necessary but lace is sooo, last century.
