View Full Version : Taken aback question

My game buddies and I played 4 games right after it was delivered last week. We all greatly enjoyed it and congratulate Ares Games on a fine design. One question came up with regard to the #5 taken aback card. One of us got taken aback due to a wind change and as the planned maneuver was a straight move, the red 5 card was used for the taken aback move. It appears that unlike the other two cards, with the #5 card, baring another wind change, the ship is stuck in reverse until it gets pushed off the board or is surrendered. Is this correct or have I missed something in the rules?

That would only happen if the Capt of that ship continued to plan straight maneuvers (cards with a VR of 5). As soon as he/she plans a 0-4 or 6-10 card, the taken aback card would use either the 4- or 6+ version. Does that make sense?

Thanks. That is what we actually ended up doing, but we were not certain it fit the literal reading of the rules.

Since you can never plan a red card, you always have a choice in how the taken aback will effect you on the 2nd or 3rd turn of it.

Yeah, it's kind of weird. I encountered this same dilemma in my demo game at MillenniumCon. Here's the solution: You get to program your cards. If you're taken aback, your programmed card goes way, but you replace it with the appropriate taken aback card for 4-, 5 or 6+. All you have to do is program a 4- or 6+ that is useless other than it it gets repalced by a taken aback card that turns you.

I see Taken Aback as having such great tactical potential. I can't wait to get my stuff and work through such scenarios, along with collisions and a few other situations. Fun stuff ahead.

Me too. The only bad thing about this site is, that you keep getting reminded that you don't have your ships yet.
Oh well there's still , but I'm running out of it fast.

Soon, Ed, very soon.

In the meantime, we can try to understand what happened at Soldiers Field yesterday, especially the play that folks thought was dead.
