I dug out my Hornblower boxed set the other day and started to watch the first episode. My kids piled in at that point demanding to have the TV to watch some unholy c**p of theirs ("Spongebob" or "Pair of Kings" I think), but saw what i was watching, asked if it was "pirates", found out it was about fighting at sea during the Napoleonic Wars and, grudgingly, sat down to see what old rubbish dad was watching this time. An hour and a half later they were hooked and have asked to watch the whole series over the holidays :)

Hornblower series was actually not bad. It didn't appear to suffer the problems of the Sharpe's series where battles scenes were woefully short of extras (and all the extras looked strangely familiar) , nor did it on a cursory glance have the historical howlers evident in Sharpe. (The cuirassiers that appeared in various episodes of Sharpe were pretty silly as they were only some detachments in Spain for 1808-1809). Saying that, my knowledge of the land aspects of the period is better than the naval so I probably missed a lot.

Actually, IIRC, a regiment was activated, formed from drafts, on the East coast. Never fought against Wellington, but did good service out there.

There is quite a lot of "swash" here but how you buckle it I'm not sure.

Apply gelatine to swash, producing a paste which is easier to work with, then chill until firm. This allows you to hammer it to a leather-like consistency at which point it can be cut into strips and buckled.
