With the delay in SoG it is time I finally return my attention to my Pre-dread fleets. Never one to do things half way I jumped back in whole heatedly and placed a huge order with Panzershiffe to round out my 1/2400 USN and Spanish fleets. I already have the complete fleets for RUSSO-Japanese war as well a Span-AM war....now it is time to venture into hypotheticals.

I ordered the rest of the USN Pre-Dreadnought ships along with the Spanish and Germans that would be available in 1906.

My long time plan has been to stage some large scale SPAN-AM battles where the Spanish are not completely outnumbered. In addition I hope to pit my USN vs Japanese in 1905-1906 and USN vs. Germans in a conflict over the Philippines.

New USN ships:

New Spanish and German Ships:

All are already primed and ready for paint, but I doubt any of these will be ready for ROCKCON. Little Wars is not out of the question though.

A friend has been pestering to play with my SPAN-AM stuff since I completed it two years ago, but the historical battles are so lopsided. This should give us some options. ;)

To give you an idea of what the finished product will look like here a few I already completed:

More to come.......

Those are Panzerschiffe, aren't they?

Yes they are. I really like them for my PreDreads and even WWI Cruisers. For WWI Capital ships I step up to GHQ as PS just does not have the superstructure detail I desire (Cage masts etc), With the Pre-dreads I add the masts using various thickness piano wire and styrene chits I make with a standard hole punch and my pin drill. Not bad for a $3-4 model and some time.

Either way they are good gaming models it is all a matter of preference. Somebody informed me that WTJ is now expanding their line to offer other scales including 1/2400, so I may try some of theirs since cost is about the same.

Love your "Olympia" model ! There is a group in the Philadelphia area planning a weekend gaming convention (participation games for the Brits!) on board the ship next year. It is a great way to raise money for her upkeep. I am planning on running a SoG game if all goes well.

That event would be pretty spectacular. Take lots and lots of photos if it all works out.

One of my gaming pards use to live out there and knows about the event. He is trying to talk me into going and staging SPAN-AM war at the event. It would be pretty special. Assuming I complete these I may consider it. I already have all the historical ships that fought in the war.

Very nice collection, Aaron.

Do you have any pictures of a ship next to a coin or something to give a feel for scale?

Not currently, they are 1/2400. To give you an idea the majority of the bases I use at 1"x 3"

I was in Philadelphia this weekend and there was a maritime festival at Penn's Landing where the "USS Olympia" is docked. I must resist the urge to start painting minis for another era! You still had vestiges from the age of sail on these ships. Adm. Dewey stood in the open in front of the bridge when he gave his famous order, " You may fire when you are ready, Gridley"!
