On the 8th of July 1716, Venetian and Turkish fleets battled off the island of Corfu in the Ionian Sea. The Turks wanted to capture the island, and in May of that year, they sailed from the Dardanelles Strait under the command of Kapudan Pasha Canum Hoca. The Venetians, under the command of Andrea Cornaro, set out to meet the Turks, and on the 8th of July, the two forces engaged. Cornaro led his 27 ships southward along the Albanian coast, whereupon he attacked the Turkish fleet as he approached the island. Canum Hoca sailed out with the majority of his fleet to meet Cornaro. Throughout the afternoon, the two forces battled until the darkness of evening and still wind brought the fighting to a close. Though the engagement, itself, was indecisive, it demonstrated that the Turkish fleet was a viable target.
