Shapeways the 3D printing company produce a 1:700 scale model of H.M.S. Surprise from the movie 'Master and Commander'.

5460

They also produce one or two other sailing ships. Now if they could be persuaded to produce them in 1:1000 scale......

Now that doesn't look too bad. :sly:

That is exactly what Ares should have done. Notice there is none of that ugly plastic between the sails and the masts! And actually this isn't the 1/700 ship they make for $12.45. This is a picture of the "Small" H.M.S. Surprise they have for $7.99. They don't say what scale, but with the quarter as reference it looks about 1/1000 scale with a stated size of 2.598 w x 0.772 d x 1.875 h in inches and 6.6 w x 1.96 d x 4.762 h in centimeters. They also have two other "small" shipd, the H.M.S. Interceptor for $8.49 and a Xebec for $7.99.

The shapeways masts and sails are much better, but the rest of the ship doesn't hold a candle to SoG.

TBH the masts are pretty crabby. they have just modelled a continuous vertical pole rather than stepped sections. Schoolboy error I'm afraid. And the hull is rather gash too. For that price buy a Navwar model for an easy build or shell out a bit more for a Langton.

I'm also a big Langton fan, and if I didn't have so many &%$*! hobbies, my fleet would be much larger. But for me, ready made SoG's are just what the doctor ordered.

There is nothing easy about a Navwar build!
