On the 4th of June 1805, a shore party of 50 men, under the command of First Lieutenant James Lucas Yeo of the HMS Loire (44), prepared to land at Muros, Spain, as the Loire prepared to engage a French privateer that was fitting out in the bay. The British were welcomed by gunfire from a small battery, which quickly fell to Yeo and his party. Additional gunfire erupted from a large fort a quarter mile away. Yeo led his party, which included Marine Lieutenants Mallocks and Douglas, to the fort to silence the twelve 18-pounders. The Loire’s master, Mr. Cleverly, anchored the ship so its broadside could return fire. With the fort captured and her guns destroyed, the Loire’s Captain, Frederick Lewis Maitland, took possession of the 26-gun privateer, Confiance. He negotiated peace with the town’s inhabitants in exchange for their cooperation in bringing the ship’s guns and stores onboard. The British discovered a privateer brig, the Belier, in the early stage of refitting and burned it. Yeo’s men transferred 40 barrels of gunpowder, two small brass guns, and small arms from the fort to the Loire. Subsequent to bringing the Confiance to England, Yeo took command of her.
