On the 31st of June 1794, as the fog from the previous day lifted, Admiral Howe discovered that Admiral Villaret de Joyeuse’s fleet was still within sight. Unfortunately for Howe, the French fleet appeared battle ready, with little signs of damage from the previous engagement. The British ships, however, were scarred in rigging and hulls. Under the cover of fog, the French swapped several ships between Villaret’s fleet and the convoy, replacing the Admiral’s damaged vessels with fresh ones. By evening, the British closed much of the distance with the French, but Howe kept his fleet out of range. He wanted to wait until morning to preclude any mishap with signaling or its interpretation. As night passed, both fleets maintained visual contact. Sailing westward, Villaret was drawing the British further away from the convoy.

On the 31st of May 1809, boats from the HMS Topaze engaged a French coastal convoy off the coast of Demata, Albania. Under the command of Captain Anselm John Griffiths, the Topaze had joined British forces in the Adriatic campaign, and in March, along with the HMS Kingfisher, unsuccessfully engaged the French frigates Danaé and Flore. On the last day of May, however, she captured five of the coastal convoy boats and sank four others while under heavy fire.
