On the 30th of May 1794, Admiral Howe continued his pursuit of Admiral Villaret de Joyeuse’s fleet, after having ascertained the condition of the British ships. With the exception of the HMS Caesar, under the command of Captain Anthony Molloy, all of Howe’s captains stated they were ready for combat. Unfortunately for the British admiral, his fleet was hindered, throughout the day, from engaging the French due to fog. Howe feared that Villaret’s fleet would now be able to escape.

On the 30th of May 1814, a party of British marines and sailors were defeated at the Battle of Big Sandy Creek. The British force, under the command of Captain Stephen Popham, attempted to cut out American boats carrying heavy guns and supplies intended for newly built frigates to be used by Commodore Isaac Chauncey. At 8:00 a.m., the American force, under the command of Lieutenant Melancthon Taylor Woolsey, came under fire from the British, and hid themselves along the shoreline awaiting a British advancement onshore. By 10:00 a.m., the British had worked their way up the creek, only to be ambushed by the concealed American force. After 10 minutes of fighting, the British surrendered to prevent further losses.
