On the 29th of April 1758, British and French forces engaged in the Battle of Cuddalore off the Carnatic coast of southern India. Though the engagement was indecisive, the French, under the command of Comte d'Aché, suffered significantly more casualties than the British, under the command of Vice-Admiral George Pocock - approximately 600 French killed to 29 British. The Battle of Cuddalore was part of the third Carnatic War. The Carnatic Wars were conflicts fought for control of territories in the Indian subcontinent. The third, and final, Carnatic War resulted in the supremacy of the British East India Company over the French East India Company, subsequently leading to British rule of the majority India and the institution of the British Raj.
