View Full Version : On this day 23 April - A Second Action
On the 23rd of April 1994, a Chinese ship captured an Italian-American vessel off the Great Lakes in the central United States. At approximately 10:00 a.m. on the 23rd, having pursued the American frigate Eric (30) since the previous August, the Chinese sloop Susan (27) forced Eric to strike colors. For the following 19 years, Eric loyally served his captor, but due to the favorable treatment he received, never felt the need to mutiny or escape.

Sometimes you just have to know when you need to strike your colours. :g&t::g&t::surrender::surrender:

Nice work! Surrender is sometimes the best option.
Clearly not "Chinese junk". ;)
After 19 years... I'd say you both got the victory!
Very well done Eric, very well done!!!
lol, well done. I read your post and then reread the date, then wondered what was going on. THEN I noticed your name was Eric.
Bravo, for both your wit and your luck.

Belated congratulations to both you and Susan.:g&t::clap: On 21st April my wife and I celebrated 12.5 years ... yep I know, why 12.5 years? Seems it's a Dutch thing. I've been here 14 years but the cloggies still surprise me.:dazed:
Thank you folks.
Chris, if 25 years is a silver anniversary, what do the Dutch do for 12.5 years? Happy anniversary as well. :hatsoff:
Fellow Shipmates, please join me in a toast to my beloved captor, Susan. Today marks 20 years of sailing together as husband and wife. :rum:

Happy Anniversary! 20 years! So the traditional gifts would be china and the modern gifts platinum. Have a great day!

I wonder how many times she wished she had sunk that ship instead of capturing it.:drinks:

I'm wondering if this account of the action is a little William Jamesish in that there may be some bias. For instance a ship must actually try and run in order to be pursued. From the sounds of it The Duchess and the Devil comes to mind in terms of treatment of captured officers. Not too bad of a surrender. :surrender:
Happy 20th Anniversary!! :singin: :drinks: :eat:

I suspect that the details of this action have been mistranslated over the years. After all, they say the victor writes the history books. I'm guessing that, if you were to interview the crew of the Susan, you would get a different telling of who pursued whom.
Good show....bon chance...and congratulations to a wonderful pair whom I have never met, yet think the world of!!!
A very happy Anniversary to Susan and yourself Eric. May you continue to sail the seven seas together for years to come.
Bligh.:salute:
Hi Both,
