On the 13th of April 1796, the HMS Indefatigable, under the command of Captain Edward Pellew, was pursuing the French frigate Unité (32) as she was heading to shore. Pellew signaled to the frigate HMS Révolutionnaire (40) to intercept the French ship. After the Révolutionnaire fired a second broadside, the French captain, Charles-Alexandre Léon Durand Linois, surrendered. The British commissioned the captured ship as the HMS Unite.
