It looks like British and French ship models will dominate the early releases of Sails of Glory, as they should for the Napoleonic period. What nationality would you like to see Ares give more attention to next?

United States. I think the War of 1812 and the little spat with England near the end of the 18th century lend themselves to interesting engagements, interaction with the French and British, and are from a close-enough time period to utilize the first wave of ships. From there, merchants, pirates, and privateers could be good extensions.

Considering KS and Waves 1 & 2 are primarily English & French, I would like to see Spanish and American for the next couple Waves. Each of these could be used with the existing fleets or on their own.

As others have said, Merchants and other "use anywhere" ships will be really important for scenarios and I would hope some of these will start showing up.

And perhaps some classic Pirate / Privateer ships could be a fun KS option later in the year? They can still sell them normally after but those that want to KS them can get them earlier and perhaps have some exclusive historical ships. In many cases, the ships for the pirates are really just going to be repaints of existing ships...sloops, merchants, etc. For example, Blackbeard (Queen Anne's Revenge) is going to be a very popular purchase but exclusives could include documented but less well known pirates such as Hornigold's Ranger or Bonnet's Revenge / Royal James (hey! that can be a SideA/SideB ship!).

If we get xebecs and galleys in the merchant releases we should have rules for oared warships. As for special weapons such as edinorogs, watch this space; I'm working on a Russian War variant for the 1850s plus a few more variations, and weapons such as these are in the mix

A bit like carronades with a little more BOOM! If they worked? Only used in 1 or 2 pairs on each deck. So on a 3rd rate 74 only 2 to 4 Edinorogs per side out of 37 guns broadside. But could be loaded faster. I don't know, maybe start a fire on a dice roll 11+ with 2xd6????

A lot will depend upon where Ares wants to go with this game, whatever we want.

GW :puke: Used to produce a large number of board-games, some of which made it to the small screen.

Space Hulk at least Three expansions were done.
HeroQuest
Judge Dredd:
Apocalypse
Battlecars
Block Mania - 2000AD Judge Dredd setting
Blood Royale
Curse of the Mummy's Tomb
Kings and Things
Quirks
Railway Rivals
Warlock
The Warlock of Firetop Mountain
Dungeonquest
Fury of Dracula
Talisman
Warrior Knights
Blood Bowl
Advanced HeroQuest
Talisman and all the expansions etc. to name but a few

The problem for GW was / is keeping sales going, some games had several expansions, some were one-off games, with no follow up sales possible, which is why, apparently games like Space hulk and Talisman are now out of print and can reach stupid money on evilbay. Hence GW now go for battle games rather than RPGs; more figures; more sales; more ! Furthermore the ranges are updated; new monsters; new armies; new weapon systems, once they have you hooked…. :moneygone:

Ares will have that problem; there are few gamers who will collect the fleets at Trafalgar, :minis: and most customers will have two or three ships per side. Most will get maybe two or three nations at most, from what I have seen of the play-tests on You - Tube more than three or four ships per side is going to get messy. Battleships drawn up in lines as per a conventional wargame is going to be a non-starter. From reading around the subject a little, it seems that ships WERE captured :surrender: and put into service with a new nation. I cannot imagine that many who play the game will be unaware of this fact and the idea that the Soleil-Royale, the Constitution or the HMS Victory can be captured and re-flagged will not have escaped many. The fact that Ares say it is a French, American or British ship will not amount to a hill of beans if little Johnny and his mates want to re fight the USS Constitution vs HMS Guerriere, and Ares have only produced French and Brits.

 Nationality? Arrrggghhh!

I agree make another flag for it and play on...

As with Wings where there are few of us who have 20 or 30 planes, we just don’t need more than 5 or 6 ships per side for a good quick enjoyable game. There may be some who will not want to use the ships for Sails, but will use other rule sets, as they do not want to go through the tedium of painting, building rigging loads of ships. This may be the best market for big sales for Ares.

If we want the Sails franchise to work, we must accept that Ares is in this for no other reason than to turn a shilling. Many years ago, I knew a rep from a shotgun maker, trying to break into the US market, he dreamt of 1-2% market share, I was surprised at this low level of penetration until he told me that that could be 20-30,000 guns! :shootleft: :shootright: The bean counters at Ares will have break–even point, if they don’t think it will fly, it will not get launched.

I have no idea how many people have Wings games, I have less idea how many will buy Sails. At least the kick-starter project will have softened the development costs, but at the end of the day they need to make sales, selling to old (previous) customers is easier than breaking in a new batch.

Like some others here, I have little intention of getting Sails models, so I have no axe to grind, I suggest therefore, that Pirates & Merchants are high up on the list of new ideas. Especially if a New Pirates of the Caribee film is made!

New nations for the less imaginative folk (Ares say its British so it must be British! :smack:) Spain, Holland, Russia & the Ottomans can follow later, they need to strike the imagination of the poor young kids that might blunder into the hands of GW.:angry::angry:

According to this thread

http://www.sailsofglory.org/showthread.php?1021-Merchant-Ships-Hull-up-on-the-horizon!

Ares is already planning a merchant/pirate wave. Although I do not really see a point in terms of game play. Just slow, undermanned, poorly armed merchants against highly armed, trained and fast pirates. In scenarios were navy ships are hunting pirates it would be the other way round. That would leave us pirate vs. pirate action.

Maybe they should get a license of this http://www.starz.com/Originals/BlackSails . At least something I'm looking forward to.

Historically, I would go for Sweden/Russia. Maybe having some danish vessels could provide a historic link to the british.

I think I have said this on an another thread. 6 plus big fat merchants. One or two men-of-war escort ships. Small frigates or smaller. Fight off X number of pirate ships. The less or smaller the pirate ships the higher the reward for them. That would be a naval chess game.

Rab,
I have been lucky thanks to David to have seen a number of games and played one game of SOG. One could mix SOG ships and 1-1200 ships It does not look so wrong. If you add (not GLUE) a thicker base with all the information for SOG (it would have to be a little wider for the bigger ships) on it to a 1-1200 ship. It would help. So they are not the end of the world.

A one-piece casting, with the boats molded integrally with the clear plastic base and painted. Adapting this to Sails would mean a new lid-piece with two or three generic small vessels, could even use the same hulls for all nations and just plug in brig-rig or schooner-rig masts to suit.
