    Default HMS Indefatigable

My build of HMS Indefatigable is as finished she can get until I get ratlines.

I tried to make the stern a little more like what I've seen models of her look like.

As nobody suggested any stats I tried my hand att making them myself.

I'm not sure that it should be burden 5, but in the game mechanic it's a little lika toughness and being a razée she has the thickness of the hull of a third rate.
I guess that the new deck with USS Constitution would probably fit better, but until I get that one...
Same goes for the red border. It's between HMS Sibylle and HMS Bellona where I'm guessing they will place the heavy frigates/forth rates.

Not sure if it's reasonable but with a weight of the broadside of 510 lbs puts her pretty much in the middle between HMS Sibylle and HMS Bellona, so I tried to do the same with the numbers.
With a crew of 310 she's a little more than HMS Sybille so I took the same numbers as her.

    Now...
What abilities would Captain E. Pellew have...

The carronades by the way was made by 0.75 mm thick plasticard and a plastic frame I stretched over a candle.

The first try was too big...

One of the two ships Ares should have produced (Unité class with British flagged HMS Surprise being the other). Great job on the conversation.

    It's the Anchorage Store ratlines.

I bought a few sets as I have first wave frigates that could use the smaller sets.

It's the first time I've tried to apply ratlines and it was fiddly!

Oh, in my youth... I've painted epic marines as legion of the damned. That is, put writing on the oversized shoulder pads of 6mm miniatures. Written "BORN TO DIE" and "BERSERKER" with a brush. I could have spelled INDEFATIGABLE on the stern. Now I have trouble seeing the ratlines without consentrating and lots of lights. Worst part? I'm not even 50.

Really outstanding work! Those carronades are perfect. I am so jealous. A lot of people know of Indefatigable only through the Hornblower and Aubrey novels. But her real life adventures were much more exciting than the books. Thanks for the inspiration.

    Thank you, thank you.

I'm very pleased with how the carronades turned out. I wonder if I can find a use of the way too big carronade...

She's my pride and joy. Haven't used her in a game yet, though. But I hope it will not have to wait too long.

That is an excellent piece of modelling Jonas!

Could you use your big carronade in a shore battery or build a model of a 'bomb ketch' and mount it as a mortar?

I thought of shore battery, but they want the range. I could probably remake it to a mortar.
Then it's not wasted, not that it wasn't useful for experience when making the ones for Indie.

I updated the ship card to Veer 5 since I've been uncomfortable with a sum of burden and veer over 10.

The old card is apparently still there as an attachment.

I managed to removed the old card.

Now all proof of me making a sum of Burden and Veer over 10 is all gone.

If I only would get me an L-deck... wonder if the V&C will arrive before the end of April...

Jonas your work is jaw dropping. I myself have been a miniature master for goin' on 30+ years and i'm inspired by your work. I have never attempted ships (as most modellers say, 'it's the hardest thing to do') but after viewing your fine talent, i'm givin her a shot. My HMS SURPRISE and Captain Jack Aubrey are almost done (will post pics), except for logs and cards (no printer, or printing skill), first try at mini ships going well, little easier than I thought, but I give the credit to you for your fine pics of your ships.

Although she didn't see action against the U. S. Navy, HMS Indefatigable under Captain John Fyffe was operational during the War of 1812. Could be a good "what if" match up against USS Constitution under the command of Captain Isaac Hull.

    Fantastic work Jonas. Well done.
I relived a part of my wargames youth lately by buying two full legions of epic space marines and old beetleback era titans.
2 full sets of the original Space marine game and a full set of Adeptus Titanicus too.
I even found all the old relevent white dwarf magazines too.
    Happy days!

She did not go into service until after the American Revolution. From what I found, she served on the South American Station just prior to the war of 1812 but was back in Portsmouth at the outbreak of the war. She appears not to have done very much after that, being broken up in 1816. I found one comment that only said Brazil 1813. I have not found anything else that would indicate she returned to American waters during the war. Maybe someone else has some more information on her activities during the time of the War of 1812.

Guess I got her confused with another Frigate then!! Though I was thinking of the blockade during 1812 - 1814, they had thought about taking Charleston again, but had learned their lesson from their previous experience in the AWI.

I remember reading somewhere that in 1814 the Admiralty considered stripping out her gun deck to transport troops during the invasion for New Orleans, but they passed on the idea after other ships came available following the abdication of Napoleon. Think I got that from a note in one of Lavery's books! Will see if I can find it again, just to see if my memory isn't playing tricks on me!

    Splendid work!

All I can do with my skills is painting the masts and adding some rope... but making a Razée? Definitely not!

If you find the time, could you please upload pics of the plastic frame used for the Carronades before stretching them? Really interesting (and I could use the technique for modelling my land batteries ... seems like you can bring them much better in form than sawn off nails.)

The plastic from the sprue of a plastic kit is at least softer than the tough as nails nails...
By heating it more you get thinner results.

It was an idea someone told me for making antennas for model WWII vehicles.
Quite useful for many different applications and can be varied depending on what you are doing.

I used those to make the small round stuff on the front of the forecastle on Victory.

Oh, that small round stuff on the front of the forecastle!

Works out quite nicely (especially with the correct blue pattern instead of plain black).

(Edit: Could you please share some more pictures of your Victory with us? Saw you had another thread about her but for example without the forecastle changes)

Sven posting yesterday brought this thread to my notice Jonas.
That is a model I will have to give a go to.
What a great job you have done.
You have also reminded me after about 30 years what we used to do with plastic sprue and a candle.
funny how some things just slip to the back of ones memory.
