On the 2 March 1783, the HMS Resistance captured two French ships off of Grand Turk Island. The two ships were originally anchored, but having been spotted, they attempted to flee from the British fifth rate 44 gunner. Captain James King ordered the Resistance to pursue the French warships. Having caught the first ship, the Resistance fired a broadside at the 20 gunner, upon which the French vessel surrendered. King then pursued the second ship, a 28 gunner. The French fired at the British with her stern guns, but to no avail, for once the Resistance came alongside her, she surrendered as well.
