I take it that you are referring to the Union Flag flying from the foremast, Rob. Nowadays the Royal Navy only flies a Union Flag from the masthead to indicate the presence of the Sovereign or an Admiral of the Fleet on board. If it is flown from the yardarm it indicates that a court martial is taking place on board.
Admiral Lord Howe flew an earlier version of the Union Flag from the mainmast of the Queen Charlotte at the Battle of the Glorious First of June, according to the famous painting.
We can go even further with the flags Dave.
Look at the age of the ship. There would be no Union nor White Ensign in that period.
