    Default Battle of Lissa 1811

On 3 March 1811, a British Frigate Squadron fought 2 Frigate Squadron (1 French, 1 Venetian) for control of the Adriatic Sea island of Lissa or Vis. This would make a great SGN scenario. Although the English are outnumbered, the French start separated and therefore cannot coordinate their efforts.

Captain William Hoste was able to sink the French flagship, captured two other ships, and scattered the remainder of the enemy forces.

The convient issue is if you purchased two of each ship from the KS, then you will have 8 French and 8 British Frigates. Which makes this scenario logistically possible.

    British OOB:

HMS Amphion 32 Guns 5th Rate
HMS Active 38 Guns 5th Rate
HMS Cerebus 32 Guns 5th Rate
HMS Volage 22 Guns 6th Rate

    French OOB:

    Windward Division:
    Favourite 40 Guns 5th Rate
    Flore 40 Guns 5th Rate
    Bellona 32 Guns 5th Rate

    Leeward Division:
    Danae 40 Guns 5th Rate
    Corona 40 Guns 5th Rate
    Carolina 32 Guns 5th Rate

Agreed. This is a scenario where the Captain and Crew ability deck would come in handy. You need the quantity versus quality effect. You can also add in the "Lacking Training" optional rule for at least the Venetians.

    Eric,

Agreed on all accounts. I would also level out the playing fields by just using the ships avail as are. So the British would have 4 5th Rates, and the French 6 5th Rates but all 32 Guns. The scenario can be modified when Ares puts out more models and stats.

So, looking at what's already been confirmed, we have one sculpt in Series 2 that can be used for two ships, six needed sculpts and two complete mysteries. For now, we could probably proxy with 32's, boosting or nerfing their gunnery stats proportionally to represent 22, 38 or 44 as needed.

A couple of thoughts on play balancing:

    1. Give each squadron a standard 32 gun frigate from the original set (the play oob could always be revised after more models are released). The British are already out gunned and based on starting position beating against the wind.

    2. Use the crew/captain cards to help level out.

    3. The French divisions are not allowed to coordinate with the other French division. The captains may talk and coordinate within their divisions. That means the scenario needs a minimum of 3 players.

I agree this would be a great 3 player scenario and a good way to balance the game. As Diamondback noted once Series 2 is out we'll have proportional representation for most of the ships as well.

    I'd say "pretty essential".

I've played Lissa many times with various different sets of rules. It is an excellent action to fight out. Should be deal for SGN given its suitability for frigate actions.

    David,

What methods were used to play balance this scenario in the other games you played? Did they have similar mechanics for crew quality or training?

Essentially yes, modifiers for crew quality effects on gunnery, ship handling, damage control, etc. command and control modifiers for command quality, that sort of thing.

I think DeRuyter's suggestion to use the low training on the 3 Venietian Frigates, plus the 2 divisions not being able to coordinate, should balance the game enough. Although, its hard to say for sure without play testing. I'm planning to use this scenario as an introductory game with our local group. It's a small game which can be played multiple times.

    And I love Frigate actions!
