Paikea is both the Māori language word for humpback whale and a mythical character, who rode a whale. If you have watched the film 'Whale Rider' , the heroine in that film is named after him.

(I am informed that Paikea Chardonnay is available from the Waitrose supermarket chain in the U.K., if anyone wants to try it. I have not tried it, nor do I have any connection with those supermarkets. Obviously it will also be available in New Zealand where it is made.)
